life's short
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:57:17 AM »

ya know all this talk about the problems with our bikes and stuff, and I am one with so far two head gasket replacements, but...I am sitting at a traffic light the other day and this guy, about 75 years young or so pulls up next to me and says, that the most beautiful bike I think I have ever seen.  we proceed to talk a little while longer and he says, what do you have into that thing about $20K, so I say nope about $35 K, but I just had to have it...he thinks a couple of seconds and then looks at me and says..."life's short, isn't it"  I just turned around to my wife and said...this guy gets it.  No matter what these things are great and I am going to enjoy mine for every minute I am riding it...damn the problems. :bananarock:

Life is short, and when you get a "leaker" it shortens it even more!  :pepper:

Yeah, life's too short to be calling up asking, "is it ready yet?" >:(

great anecdote!

just last week I took the V-rod out for a quick trip - it's been getting lonely lately and how I do hate to disappoint her!

anyway, rode about 10 miles west to one of my favorite spots, Stewarts Drive-in, just off 202 in NJ.

the usual assortment of looks / passers-by (I love the fact that people are shocked that this chromeless thing says "Harley Davidson" on the "tank")

So I saddle up to leave, and a couple who pulled in - I'd guess he was about 80, she was a couple years older, maybe 84-85.

"Nice lookin' bike ya got there"

I thanked him for the compliment.  He said he wished he could still ride like he used to.  I said, "never say never" but I knew better.

We chatted a bit, and his wife couldn't stop staring - she never spoke but I swear if I had a second helmet with me and said, come on let's go around the block, she would have been tempted.  I could tell they'd ridden many, many happy miles together back in the day.

Another brief story - the owner of the hotel where I stayed in the Adirondacks was 86 - he told me all about the brand new '57 HD "74" he and his wife used to ride together (she died at age 83 over the winter).  He said "nice bike" and he wished he could get out & join me.....

Sometimes, it does get too late to have a second childhood.  Enjoy the miles when you can.  Who knows what tomorrow brings.

When the head gasket on my RK does go (and it will), I'll be upset.  But things could be worse - I'll get it fixed / replaced / whatever & move on (riding the Night Rod in the meantime of course!!)

There's nothing like a nice shiny HD to drum up a conversation. Many times at a gas station, food station or where ever many an oldtimer have come up to me and started talking about ...... I remember when I had one. These bikes are timeless & they sure as heck recharge my batteries when I go for a ride. THE MUFFMAN

OK - seriously, I worry about my KLR getting jealous of all the time I spend on the SERK...like seriously.  Then when I ride the KLR, I wonder if the SERK is brooding?   :zstupid:

Glad I am not alone.   :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

Don't joke about this chit Sean.  I brought the SERG home and a month later the SEEG grenaded its own transmission.  You don't stroke them just right and they are bitches sometimes.

When I brought the Ultra home ,the road king ran flawlessly for 10 years never even a hiccup,

the next day I went to check the battery and the speedo was all scrambled.......what is all that about
