great anecdote!
just last week I took the V-rod out for a quick trip - it's been getting lonely lately and how I do hate to disappoint her!
anyway, rode about 10 miles west to one of my favorite spots, Stewarts Drive-in, just off 202 in NJ.
the usual assortment of looks / passers-by (I love the fact that people are shocked that this chromeless thing says "Harley Davidson" on the "tank")
So I saddle up to leave, and a couple who pulled in - I'd guess he was about 80, she was a couple years older, maybe 84-85.
"Nice lookin' bike ya got there"
I thanked him for the compliment. He said he wished he could still ride like he used to. I said, "never say never" but I knew better.
We chatted a bit, and his wife couldn't stop staring - she never spoke but I swear if I had a second helmet with me and said, come on let's go around the block, she would have been tempted. I could tell they'd ridden many, many happy miles together back in the day.
Another brief story - the owner of the hotel where I stayed in the Adirondacks was 86 - he told me all about the brand new '57 HD "74" he and his wife used to ride together (she died at age 83 over the winter). He said "nice bike" and he wished he could get out & join me.....
Sometimes, it does get too late to have a second childhood. Enjoy the miles when you can. Who knows what tomorrow brings.
When the head gasket on my RK does go (and it will), I'll be upset. But things could be worse - I'll get it fixed / replaced / whatever & move on (riding the Night Rod in the meantime of course!!)
