Had posted this pic before the "hacker" blew out all the pictures.  This is a closeup of the "fix" for the Rinehart pipes.  As you can see, the object is to allow some movement of the pipe to allow for the rubber mounted engine.  Not really rocket science, but it makes no sense to install any pipes torqued down and rigid against a shaking engine.  I install a rubber washer, protected by a thin leather washer on each side for all mounting brackets for a header.  I've found that snug (just to the point of resistance) secured by a couple of drops of blue locktite holds well and doesn't stress the mounting.  Bottom line...if you, or an unknowing tech torque down a pipe solidly against a moving object...it will stress crack.  Not a problem with the pipe or manufacturer...a self induced problem with the nut behind the wrench. The more I read about the cracked rear head pipe the more I wonder if mine is cracked.  I have noticed that the heat shield is turning which l though was strange.  What signs are anyone getting other than the obvious lack of power.

The thing that tipped me off was the feeling of warm air circulating around the area behind the rear cylinder.  Put your hand in and around the area of the rear pipes while the engine is running.  You should not feel any wind.  I did and the crack in my pipe was obvious once I started looking around.

If you don't feel or see anything but still think you may have a problem, remove the heat shields.  They are held on by the screw-type hose clamps and are easy to get off.  Any cracks that you have should be very visible to the naked eye.  The first places to check are in the "y" of the pipe as shown on WFP's and my photos and also at the clamp where the left side of the y-pipe is mounted to the bracket attached to the transmission.

BigHD1340,

Another tell tale sign is your chrome starter cover starts to turn a bit yellowish from the hot air blowing on it.

You may also here some ticking.

Good answer

Can I get a good deal on that B/B?

Or are you trading?

I will gladly give you right of "Second" refusal...my Brother -in-law has "First"!

Trading in never is as good as selling outright.

Er, eh , um...I hate to report this but after all of the talk of cracked pipes I thought I'd check my Freedoms out and sure enough...It is cracked at the weld again. This is the 2nd time for me. The good news is a new one is in route to me as we speak.

BLM had a good idea in reply 60 of this thread. I did something similar but it did not work as the second pipe has cracked at the weld. I will be talking to Brad at Freedom about this problem to get his input. When I called Rick and got the new pipe on the way he insinuated that I did not have it installed or aligned properly. I have to say that this is not the first set of pipes I've installed and I am sure that its aligned correctly. I think that this is due to a combination of poor weld penetration and a poor design of the mount.

I talked with Brad at Freedom, He said that they have now included (last month or so) a spacer to be used in between the pipe bracket and the starter bracket. No problems yet. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
