No apology needed Gary.  I thought we were just joking with each other.   :bananarock:

I was bored and just trying to stir the pot a little.
The joke ended up being on me. :huepfenlol2: That's what I get for trying to do to many things at the same time just getting to old to multi-task. ;D

Well Henry that's a very good assesment of owning a dealership.
You sell what they give you, the way they give it to you, how they give it to you.
And if you do a good job then you may have your allotment increased.
If you don't then they will cut back the number of bikes you get.
There are a lot of dealerships becoming available due to the economy, Roger are you going to step up?
(if you are then hire Jenni to run internet sales and you will have a good start)

At my dealership, I have a key to the door and know the alarm code. That's enough for me!

After looking at the books (especially this past year's) and considering the purchase price in relation to what the dealership is doing today, I'd jump all over it.....especially if HD runs through your veins.

We all know that the economy is in a recession and we're at the bottom.  So much like the housing market......now is the time to buy.  In a few years (when the economy is back on top and the American doller is worth more than the Mexican peso) you'll wish you had.

Henry

Coming from you I have to say thank you!
Having a key is nothing, using it to help others is what makes it a priviledge!
Remembering the alarm code is the challenge!
I have no influence and certainly no power there but I do regard it as a priviledge.
Thanks for the thought!

Alrighty Then...........................

Folks, we've all been Blessed with a skill set.  Mine is about as far away from salesmanship as our planet is from Pluto.  I have enough trouble accepting and conforming with standard work, when I know, from experience, of better methods to accomplish tasks........so if it we're me, and even if I had the resources, I'd invest in a more stable venture that offered the opportunity to use the skill set with which I've been Blessed.  Roger, we know you are VERY good at what you do..........and with your skill set, you would likely pioneer a new structure by which these dealerships might run more effectively and efficiently.  Ideally, the dealership should be the one stop shop, but unfortunately...........for myriad reasons.............for most of us, the dealership ends up being abhorred.  It doesn't have to be that way................and Jenni is one shining example of how it should be done.  Roger, if you head down this path, I know you will excel and set new standards, which will hopefully be emulated by other dealerships.  Whatever you decide, Renea and I wish you the very best Blessings.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the thumbs up, it would certainly be a challenge and fun to do, but I still think I'll have to keep it on a wish list and let someone else make a run at it.

Is great to see everyone's thoughts on it.

Roger,

I would love to have a conversation with you on this subject.

As you may remember, I am in the same business as you, just on the OEM side.  I have been approached by a group that is looking to acquire 3 dealerships and have asked about my interest in helping to run them.  Very tempting, but I'm pretty locked in to what I am doing now.  I have seen some financial statements from some HD stores and it appears there is money to be made.  As most have stated, they need to have the right folks operating them the right way.  I feel there is a huge opportunity to take the stores to a new level success and customer satisfactioin by applying some of the more successful procedures and processes that have worked in the automobile business.

As I have been in hundred and hundreds of car dealerships in my career, it is pretty easy to tell within 5 minutes which ones are run properly.

I am definitley going to keep this on my radar.

How many pieces of pole can I splice together?

Discretionary income is dropping (at least CNN and Hillary keep telling me that).
People's financial outlooks are bad (Washington Post and The Nation, oh and Hillary too).
We're going to be eating our children to survive the last few months of the Bush Administration (Hussein Obama, Hillary, Al Gore, Al Franken).
If someone is going to buy a motorcycle for the great gas mileage, they probably aren't going to get one that costs the same as five or six thousand gallons when they can get one that does twice the mileage at a third the price.
Bikes that used to be sold before they were built are now sitting on the showroom floor.
The company that ignores and screws its customers so they won't be coming back to you is also going to be telling you how to run your business.
Company stock, what is most dear to the Company, is worth half what it was a year ago.
Your inventory will include the same high-margin engineering disasters that the current CVO line-up has.  People are catching on that it is wise to not buy them.  There isn't a lot of profit in the company paying you base rate to replace gaskets...and cylinders...and crankshafts...and engines...
You will have to learn the various mantra of, "they all do that", "that's normal for these", "the factory rep says they won't cover it", "well, you could go over in the corner and f*** yourself", etc.

I wouldn't touch it with said pieced together pole.
