07 CVO 110 Installing Axtell Cylinders
« on: June 18, 2008, 10:58:24 AM »

Everyone,

Question is to those that have made the switch to Axtell Cylinders.  Are you guys using the Axtell supplied base gasket and the cylinder base o-ring together.  If so, are you orienting the base gasket with the embossment facing up away from the o-ring or down facing the o-ring.

Axtell has been excellent to deal with and they say to use both the base gasket and the o-ring together, as well as the o-ring on the two lower dowel pins which carry oil drains.

Just want to see what has worked best for different folks. :drink:
Thanks,

JPB

As per their instruction I used o-rings and the base gasket.  It's been long enough ago I don't remember the specifics of the gaskets orientation other then that the impression of the gasket around the dowel pin made it apparent which way was up.

Oh... and no leaks or other issues with the install being done that way in maybe 4k miles since the installation.  Not a lot.  But enough to do if it was going to crap out right away.

I am intrested in these also but from what I am reading the engine case needs machined. I think thats going to cost to much money for me to put into the brand new 110 engine thats leaking. The dealer would have to take my engine completely apart correct? Are there any new cylinders that can be installed without machining the case and they will hold up better than factory 110 cylinders?

Axtell offers a direct drop on cylinder for your 110.  Give them a call.

Use of Axtell 110 cylinders do not require any case machining.  I used both the base gaskets and all the o-rings - base o-rings and dowel o-rings.  The o-rings fit into the contours in the base gaskets - kind of intuitive if you look at them.  I used a Cometic gasket set and MOCO base o-rings.  I torqued the heads using the Cometic torquing procedure, not the MOCO torquing procedure.  My results are so far - so good...   :2vrolijk_21:

Don't remember reading what the end result was after the weather finally broke in your favor Scott.  Did the tune get the bike to a level you expected or thought satisfactory?

I have been fairly overwhelmed with work so far this summer...so I am still riding on the tune that Howie emailed me from Joe.  It is running a bit rich, but pulls with an unbelievable amount of torque.  Plugs look acceptable.  Fantastic power.  Hopefully, I will get a break sometime soon and make my way to a tuner.  I know Wayne Hanson will be in the area in a month or so.  If I don't get a tune done sooner, I will find time to visit him when he passes thru the area.  I used him on my last few bikes and was very happy with the results.   :2vrolijk_21:

The Axtell cylinders have a bit more beef to them, and the liners are installed in a different manner then the MOCO cylinders, but they bolt right on the cases with no alterations required.

When "good enough" feels as good as you're describing it doesn't take much patience to be content and wait for a final dialing in.

And the bottoms of a pair of OE Harley cylinders.  The Harley cylinders still have the o-rings hanging on them so don't let that confuse the appearance comparison.  Lots of differences elsewhere. But interchangeable on the bottom.

Yep, that's a fact.  I am real happy with the performance of the motor.  It has a "lope" (if that's a word?) at real slow 1st gear speed, but when I twist the throttle, she just plain goes...  All the way to about 6000 thru all the gears...  Awesome thrill of acceleration!  Could earn me some up close time with local law enforcement someday if I'm not careful!
