Still on the borrowed PC?

Offer stands if you need a hand - I am the ubergeek.

Sean

Well, Norman, Binx's IT guy at work, just left. He was able to salvage my computer. Although one of the 2 HD's is trash. And we were running it in RAID as a mirror (whatever TF that means)! What it meant to me was that I lost everything on both HD's. Data was corrupt he tells me. This happened after I got home from Wayne's and after telling him I had all my pics on my HD and never had any problems! So the computer's back up and running with one HD now. I'll be getting an external HD to back everything up aotomatically each night. But a lesson was learned not to put all my eggs in one basket. I lost everything on My Documents and on My Pictures, which were really the only 2 things I cared about. All my Large Cats, Eagles, Rhinos and HD pics...GONE! All my HD documents....GONE! Oh yeah, all my Favorites....GONE!!! :o

I also just oredered Windows XP for that old laptop, which Norman will get running as well as it could, and have a decent backup computer, as well as something I can use for the SERT and PC for the bike in the garage! ;)

So I'm starting from scratch today! Don't show me any of these... :worthless: cause I have none! Bummer!!! :(

You brought it up! So you Jinxed yourself, If you remember I recoilled in Horror when you laffed about how you never had to backup anything  8)

Remember that's the reason you have more than one bike-so you always have a backup. Experience is your best teacher.

Glad your back up and getting on your way to saving stuff.

Do you still have the old HDs?

We have some data recovery softwares at work that I can try with your HDs (if you're willing to send them to me).

I have the bad one that corrupted the data in both mirrored HD's, right in front of me. The other one was reformatted today so I could get the computer running again. Do you perform computer forensics? The guy that set everything back up for me is an IT guy from a Fortune 500 Corp. He knows his stuff and couldn't recover the data. I'm told one of these computer forensics companies might be able to salvage the data. Thanks.

I think there's a shot at saving some of that stuff. I had a worm go through my computer a few years ago and it was very destructive to the HD. The Geek Squad at Best Buy believe it or not were able to pull everything off my hard drive and put it all on back up Cd's for me. All I had to do was reload all my stuff that I had lost. I too have learned my lesson the hard way and now I have an external HD so that chain of events doesn't happen again.

No, but I deal with a lot of computers.  We have 1500+ PCs at the office and every day someone crashes one.  Even if some of your pics are recovered is better than nothing.  Let me know and I PM you the address and more info.

That brings up this question. What makes an EHD anymore reliable than the regular HD? If you use an external HD for back up and get a "worm" or "virus" or crash, wouldn't that also get transferred to, or mess up the EHD when it's performing a daily back up? :nixweiss:

Thanks Hunter. If I can't get it recovered locally, I might just take ya up on that! :2vrolijk_21:

It is not really.  But, the best practice is to have an external and sync it once every few days.  That way if anything goes wrong, you might loose couple days of data.  And also make sure to check the data integrity with a different PC (if you have multiple).  I prefer manual back-up and my PCs have 2 internal drives, one has all the software and OS and the other one has only data.  I have not used any anti virus in the last 10 years with only 2 infections that was easily removed with no data loss.

Being the uber-geek that I am - I have a home network with a Dell server as the heart.   RAID 5 (Random Array of Inexpensive Disks), that I mirror to an external.  I also have an external service that loads my data up (encrypted)...  on top of that I shoot .zip files from time to time and keep them on DVD, stored in my gun safe.

I have over 5000 pics of my kids and other stuff - and it's priceless so I protect it to the degree it deserves.  I do this for a living and have seen too much stuff lost over the years.  Just spent the last week cramming for my  CISSP, got three weeks to study and another cram and I sit it the 18th of Aug, so I am even more IT security paranoid then my normal level of paranoid.   :nixweiss:

Alright, thanks for the thread, Howie!  You guys just freaked me into backing up my files to the external HD.  Hadn't done it for a year - since right before our move.

Only thing I didn't back up are my iTunes library.  Isn't there some deal where you can only copy mp4 files to other computers "x" number of times before they won't work anymore. :nixweiss:  I've created music CD's of everything I've downloaded, so I'm covered there . . . just wonderin'.

There is solution for every problem (software).  If it was developed by man, it can be hacked by man.  Let me know what software you need.

I backup my data on a regular basis to a EHD. Software (including system, drivers, etc) I'm not really concerned about as I have all the disks to reload them. It's time consuming to reload the software, but I've found that doing it that way instead of restoring it the system seems to run faster. Also end up not loading all the software back because I've found that some programs I can do w/o and no sense having them on 'puter. I've actually learned a lot from crashing and rebuilding even though it was a pain in the butt. It also helps to have a backup computer. :2vrolijk_21:
