Got my kit, here's a picture of the wing nut....

That's the look I got when I asked about the engine recall at the dealership.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean?  High expectations for a fix are only warranted after high expectaions that a 30K motorcycle doesn't need to be replaced piece by piece every year causing downtime.

Never expected it to have a leak - granted.  Had read enough & spoken to people to figure that when I had it fixed the first time, it might not be the last time.  Had heard info this summer would be the "final" deal & lo & behold here it is.

Never figured I would get a new motor is what I meant.  Early on motor replacements were more common (IMHO) since HD was tearing them down to figure out whythehelltheywereleaking.

As to down time - cannot ride every day so schedule repair stuff when I do not have any riding planned, basically.  So it's just a trip to the dealer a couple of times & luckily it's  not that far away.

Extremely disappointed that no free Slim Jims are being offered to 110 owners from the MoCo.  Will get over it, but, darn it.........

here's my opinion:  if i had my first motor replaced not fixed, had my second motor replaced not fixed, why would i have my third motor fixed not replaced (with all the fixes) ?

i love the way my bike rides when it's running

i just can't decide if i want to return this (pos) bike and try an 09 (possable first production 118) :drink:

ISKI where did you see the letter that said cylinders were included? Just wondering. The letter sent to a dealer in Va stated nothing about cylinders. There was also a discussion about the Geographic areas of the US and heat issues with the bikes in the south. There were different downloads as well for these bikes. This was a while ago when this was being talked about.

"There are one or more open safety recalls or product improvement campaigns on your vehicle. The following list contains the campaign number and a brief description:

This is the code that came up when I put my VIN in. I guess they don't know about my own "product improvement campaign" yet! ;)

THE DAWG

DAWG - I did not see that memo from Steve Phillips (the one in PDF form here on the board).  What I saw was something else - a tech bulletin perhaps - not signed by anyone.  It had the parts listed separately - in column form in the body of the form - and the top item was cylinders.  Person I spoke with figured that would be the cylinder/head combo but if there were part numbers I did not get them.  Could not get a copy of it - it referred to a letter to go to all CVO owners also  Bikes were all 110's from 2007 & 2008s up until April 2008.  There was a service bulletin out around 3/22 that apparently indicates when the "change" was implemented at the factory.  That's just an educated guess & was also just prior to mine getting fixed.

When I put my VIN in on the HD website, I get the same message as Howie & many others have.  They KNOW its a head leaker issue on the majority of the bikes with problems & a head gasket alone will not fix a faulty cylinder - been a heck of a long time since I worked on engines but when I re-read Phillips memo he does refer to heads with valve guides so maybe he just neglected to mention cylinders?

If I am in error I certainly apologize but to the best of my memory, that's what I saw.

The crank runout issue is apparently a small failure rate & when I asked about that on mine when in for repair they would check (at my expense) but claimed they have not had that many.  As these bikes roll into higher mileages time will tell the tale on that one as well as this "fix."  Hope it works - since they have an 09 110 apparently HD thinks so & its their warranty (sorry Howie LOL).

Will not have access to what I saw until later this week so will re-check to make sure & post an update.

Nige,

There is a rumor - I consider it a nasty one myself - that Howie's engine is not "Bone Stock."  Doing what we can to quell it of course.  Of course he might have made a few "minor adjustments" but certainly these would not have invalidated his w......y?

Well what can I say. I never realised Howie was that kind of guy! I thought he held the MoCo in high esteem and would never do anything to alter the highly prized and much sought after 110 SERK that he purchased from them. Are you saying that he has put highway pegs and such on the bike?

Nige!!!!!!!!!  shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!    I put highway pegs on my bike and know that they severely restricted the air flow to the flux capacitor but of course I remove them when riding in public.

As best I can tell, Howie has done absolutely nothing to his bike except use a non MoCo label/approved wash/wax product that may have contributed to semi-excessive heat buildup due to its non HD polymers in Air Tunnel tests at over 150 mph.   Or maybe that was 150 mph in the Holland Tunnel or Lincoln Tunnel?  I get mixed up in this tunnel stuff especially in NYC.

Mike, the fact that the MoCo changed the spec on allowable runout of the pinion shaft to approximately 5 times the old figure may have something to do with that low failure rate; if it's in spec, it doesn't count as a failure.  As you say, time will tell.  I will be very surprised if we don't see a lot of oil pumps worn out prematurely.

Now I know that can't be true because the last time Howies bike was washed properly was when I was there last year and I did it for him. I used high velocity NASA grade shampoo with high velocity polymers tested to 275mph and over 2500 degrees kelvin. The waxing was proofed to over three hundred tons per square inch against grit and offensive airborne bodies with a guaranteed hardened coating that was better than the enamel on your teeth! The chrome was finished with the same coating as the nose tiles on the Space Shuttle and the tires were re-vulcanised with a kryptonite hardened smoothing gel.

Unfortunately Howie ruined all of it with his drunken drags the next day!!!!!!
