Speedometer needle bounces 20-30 MPH
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:19:10 AM »

I was out for a ride this past Saturday riding on some nice lazy back roads.
According to the GPS I was holding a steady 47 MPH.
It was over 90 degrees out, but it was only 20 or 30 minutes into the ride after a 45 minute lunch break.

I glanced down and saw the needle drop from 50 to to 40 then shoot back to 50 again.
No I wasn't drinking at lunch.
So I started to watch it and saw ranges as much as 50 to 20 to 50 all in about a second and a 1/2.

I was able to enable the cruise control.  The bike is not throwing any codes.

I had pulled over and started making calls to see if it should be safe to ride.
Naitram, WFP, Special_Ed.
Special_Ed talked to DooD who looked it up in the manual.
His recommendation was to pull the sensor and clean it.

Well......I got the bolt out, but can't get the plug out.  The wire looks like it runs under the starter.
Not saying that is why I can't get it out, just can't tell if I have any slack in the line.
I can't seem to lift the plug straight up. it does spin slightly from the bottom end where the bolt was.
Also seems like the hose in front of it might be in the way. see attached photos.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Steve

Steve the sensor has a o-ring on it. It makes it a very snug fit, try moving side to side a little. Try prying it up with a srew driver or anything you can get under the sensor. If I had to guess where the wire going under the starter it has worn through and now shorting at times to ground. I had the same thing happen on my 01 Ultra.

I will try again to remove it.
Is the wire supposed to be under the starter?

Thanks

Yes that is the stupid way Harley route it. The wire usually rubs on the thru bolt on the starter. It is usually how the tie up the wire that cause the issuse, if they pull it to tight. If you need to change sensor you will have to de-pin the new sensor plug to route under starter.

Wouldn't it be easier to pull the starter?

Well I got it out.  There is some minor crud on it.  I don't see that the wire is pinched at all or rubbed through.

It didn't help.  As soon as I got it on the highway 60 on the speedo, it dropped to 10 then back up to 60.
Any other thoughts?

Steve do you notice any other guages, lights, or anything else operating weird?

If no it is possible that the sensor is starting to bite the dust....mine did.....you wil have to check to see if the sensor is bad.

Every thing else looks like it is working.  I did the WOW test and it passed.

How do you test the sensor?

Thanks

Where does the other end of that cable/wire go? Could something possible be loose/dirty/ajar on the other end? :nixweiss:

Steve, my '95 Dyna did the same exact thing. Sorry to say, the speedo itself was the culprit. You still got w.....ty on that thing?
