Other side of my head was the same!    I had trouble with the corners of my mouth drooping and splitting - winters were a nightmare, just open splits - so they took a bit out of my left leg, split my cheeks and sewed the thing out of my leg in to each side to pull up and support the corners of my mouth. Only worked on one side....

Yep, it is healing well.  I see the Doc again tomorrow.  The only thing I have going on is there may be a nerve to close to the surface in one spot.  We are in a wait and see mode, but I may have to have that nerve trimmed back and buried a bit better, but I won't know for a couple of weeks.  Hopefully, it will get less sensitive at it heals.

And yeah, the pictures would be fun for some - not so much for others...          

I had some additional surgery on my missing digit yesterday.  I had some extreme tenderness on the side of my hand that wouldn't go away.  Doctor #2 (local) didn't think doctor #1 (up north) tended to the nerves very well.  So he suggested he go in and take care of them.  He  also thought Doctor #1 should not have left the remaining 1/4" of pinky nub.  His opinion was it serves no purpose and will only cause issues later on.  So he suggested it would be best to remove it at the knuckle...  So, that is what we did...

There are two nerves involved - one on the palm side of the hand and one on the side of the hand...

The nerve on the palm side was trimmed back  - he buried the end in some meat for protection.  That went well... 

The nerve on the side of my hand was pretty special.  The doctor found that doctor #1 had sutured off an artery in the original repair - and the stitch went thru the nerve.  No wonder it was so sore and aggravated.  So he removed the stitch, trimmed the nerve back and removed some scar tissue. 

The remaining nub was then removed at the joint, so hopefully that is over and done with also. 

The pain medication has not worn off completely yet -a 24 hour nerve block -  so I don't know what the level of misery will be yet.  But - I have a new supply of vicodin - so I will survive the weekend one way or another...

Hopefully, I am done with this.  Otherwise, I am going to have to find a name for my hand (Cybil comes to mind, but that names been taken by another mulitple repair beast         )

Anyway - it is raining all weekend - and the wife is on call at the hospital all weekend - so it was going to be a slow couple of days regardless...  But the healing starts all over again!  No riding for at least a week or two...

Sorry - but no surgery pictures...  Maybe after the bandages are removed there will be some picture worthy scars...

Well, now I know... 

It's frickin been hurting like a m$%#^%$#@@%^r - all day today.  Far worse then the first go around.  Vicodin hasn't even taken the bite off the hurting.  I think nerves don't like getting cut and moved around to much.  Not that I have gotten any sympathy from ANYWHERE today    (well, that's not quite true, my Shepherd looks concerned)(or he just needs to go out and take a crap - but it's been raining all day today - he could just be tired of holding it).

Oh well, time heals all wounds, right?

We were at our cabin in Northern Wisconsin over the 4th of July weekend.  We had gone up for a long weekend with another couple on the bikes.  (It is about a 300 mile one way trip.)

On the 4th, we went out on the lake on the pontoon boat to float around awhile prior to the fireworks.  (The lake is about 10,000 acres - average of about 20 ft. deep.)  So we are diving off the boat, swimming and such - like I said, waiting around for the fireworks.  We had brought the cabin neighbors along - they are elderly and enjoy the occaisional pontoon ride. 

So, I am in the process of jumping into the lake - and the nice elderly neighbor starts to get up out of her seat - and stumbles.  She reaches for the handrail, but instead grabs the gate to the handrail.  The gate closes just enough to grab my pinkie finger just as I jump.  I felt a little tug, but had no idea what had happened.  My finger first broke, right at the knuckle, then pulled off.  It was still stuck in the gate hinge when I came out of the water.  I still did not realize what had happened until I saw my friend Ken pull the finger from the hinge.          I looked down at my hand, and sure enough, I was missing a digit.  Ken got my finger on ice immediately and I climbed up the ladder and out of the water and got my hand on ice.  As hard as it is to believe, it really didn't hurt very much.  It took about 15 minutes to get off the water and another 15 minutes to get to a hospital.  It turns out that if you cut a finger off, it can be reattached, but if you pull a finger off, it does to much damage to the nerves and arteries and cannot be reattached.  Everyone involved stayed calm and cool and did just what you would hope they would do.  Of course, the neighbor feels terrible, but it was truely an unfortunate accident.

The next morning, we were all out back sitting on the deck behind the cabin overlooking the lake - when I heard my bike start up.  Turns out the neighbor had called Ken's brother Kris and told him what happened.  Kris got in his car, drove 300 miles to the cabin, came into the cabin (he had a spare set of cabin keys and a spare set of keys to our house) while we were on the deck, got my bike keys and was heading home.  When we came around the corner of the cabin, he flipped me his car keys, dropped my bike into gear and took off for the 300 mile ride home.  When we went home a couple days later (in Kris's car), my bike was all cleaned up at home in my garage.  I have great friends.   

Everything is healing nicely - surpisingly quickly (to me anyway).  It is interesting how quickly I am adapting to not having it.  I think I have heard most all of the finger jokes in existence.  Twolane is doing his part to try and be sure no potential joke opportunities slide by....  And I have some really neat pictures of my hand and my departed finger (I kept it a couple of days) taken the day after the accident.  Twolane keeps trying to post them, but the d00d patrol is on him...  Actually, they are a bit to gruesome for some folks to be posted.  I don't want to cost anyone a meal...

So that's my story.  Chit can happen fast.  But life keeps rolling along.  I was back in the bike in one week.  I don't miss my finger at all while riding.  The only real problem is my nub is really temperature sensitive.  Cool evening air is unbearably cold, so I have to wear gloves if it is anything other then hot outside.  The doctor tells me that will subside over time, but it could be a year or so.

End of story....

Scott that is a hell of a story.  Real sorry to hear about your finger.  Man you have a great attitude about the whole experience I hope you have a speedy recovery with no complications.  Tracy

Ouch Scott! Sorry you have to keep going thru this thing. The original pain and losing it should have been enough. I hope this is now the last you'll have to deal with it. Feel better!

Sounds like you might know something about this?  I already know how temperature sensitive it is - much less bumping it!

Ouch Scott! Sorry you have to keep going thru this thing. The original pain and losing it should have been enough. I hope this is now the last you'll have to deal with it. Feel better!

Forgive the quality of the pic however it is over 35 yrs. old...

Bottom Line - Jock as a kid...wrecked my first bike...ran over a dog that was hidden on the side of the road...35 stitches later in the head with plastic surgery..Here I am...I have one of the scar but I can not find it to scan.
