HEAT COMING OFF 110 ENGINE ON 2008 BIKES
« on: July 26, 2008, 09:12:08 AM »

2008 SE Ultra Owners,

About this time last year I put a $1000 deposit on an '08 SEUC.  I then did a test ride on one of the bikes and have never been so hot on a motorcycle.  I've never wanted off of a bike so badly and just could not wait for the test ride to be over.  I really considered parking it to avoid second degree burns.  I went back to my dealer and put the $1000 deposit toward the extended warranty on my '07 SERK (I figured I'd need it) and gave up the idea of trading my '06 toward an '08.

One of the first articles that I've read with a ride report on the new '09 SEUC indicated extreme heat for the rider.  I'm just curious.  What have you guys with the '08's found now that you've had some saddle time on your bikes?  Have you found the heat to be extreme in comparison to previous bikes?  Have you been able to remedy the heat issue?  Does a good set of pipes and high flow air filter help?  I've always assumed a lot of the heat is a result of the bikes running too lean from the factory.  I'd like to hear the voices of experience on this issue!

Thanks,

The hottest weather I rode in the amb. temp. gauge said 100 deg.  I don't think that the heat from the bike would've made a difference if it were lower, It was just hot outside and the only thing that could've helped the situation would be riding an ice block downhill. I guess the IED's I added helped, but I think the best thing was the heat deflectors. I've had an Interceptor, Ninja, Vrod, and now this. In comparison I really don't think its that bad. If its over 100 outside, I'm probably stayin in the A/C and I also don't ride in a lot of stop & go traffic. So thats my opinion.

When I first got mine, it was super hot. Ran like chit, stumbled at start.
But I had expected it, my 2007 ultra (96) was also hot till i tuned it.
The first thing I did was put on d&d fatcats,ac,570 geardrive cams, super sert, royal purple oil.
The caned download the shop gave me combined with all changes helped alittle.
Then I made my own map, adjusted timing for new cam, ve to compensate for for changes, afr change.
It took my several rides, and downloading about 12 maps before I was happy. With some good from DOC.
Now the thing runs like it should have from fact., and I can sit at idle for as long as needed with no heat problems (normal heat ovcourse) and I do not need the heat shields every one  talks about.  100 plus day, no rear cylinder deactivation.
IMHO  I do believe one of the keys is not just to adjust  the afr's you must adjust ve tables and timing.
It is not just the afr's causing the heat, the ve's are set low and the timing is real bad.
I had to adjust almost every timing and ve slot to get the ride I wanted.
Sorry for the long answer, but it was a good bit of work to get the bike right.
But once you do, I would not trade this bike for any of the others i have owned, the fun meter is pegged every time i ride it.
Also, you could save yourself a lot of work buy going to a good dyno tuner.   I was not paying 1,000 for a wot tune, I dont ride wot all the time.
And i dont like heat deflectors because they dont fix the problem, you are cooler but your motor is baking, not good for a motor that runs hot already.
Just my experience with the 2008 ultra.
Hope this helps you make a choice, I would buy one again, even with all the work that must be done.

I've got the D&D Fatcats, K&N High Flow Filter, and SERT on my '06.  I did the same on my '07 SERK.  I love the '07 with the additional torque.  I got about 101 HP and 101 torque on the '06 and 100 HP and 119 torque on the '07 from a good dyno tuner guy here locally.  I'm temped by the '09 SEUC, but I've never experienced heat like I did on the '08 that I test rode.  I appreciate the input, so keep it coming!  Thank again!

I have the HD mid frame deflectors, it helps a bit, but the engine still produces too much heat for my liking!

I have some friends with 08's and they switched to royal purple along with pipes and se tuner.  They said it made a difference.  Also, while at the dealership, I walked in back with a salesman and noticed several cases of Royal Purple, they recommend it.

I have SE Pro tuner, but what is Royal Purple?

No heat issues even in 90 degrees on a charity ride (2 hrs never got over 40 MPH) . Oil temp in the pan got as high as 250 degrees.

1) SC Air Cleaner
2) SuperTrapp SE Slip-ons
3) Heat Shields
4) XiEd - This is the one that makes the biggest difference

Well, I know that I haven't been on the site much lately, but the "XiEd" is a new one on me.  Tell me more!
