Did Not wait for the 2009's
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:56:06 PM »

Hello,

I have joined the ranks of the CVO touring class.  Bought a 2008 Ultra Classic in Copper Canyon / Silver today.  Traded in the 2008 SE Springer ( it was killing my back) .  I will be turning 40 next month, so I guess it is about time.  I could have reserved an 09 , but didn't care for the color combinations ( red and Autumn haze?).  The dealer had 1 2008 left and made me a  deal.  I paid less than list plus set up/freight/sales tax.  I bought the 7 year warranty with some of the money I saved.  I got home kind of late , so I will post pics later.

Other than the leaking engine problem, do you guys have any suggestions of things to look out for or mods that I need or might want to do?  Detach tour pack , etc.   Let me know, I have got a lot of learning ahead of me.

Hope you love the new ride for a long time.  Just curious what the trade in market might be.  How much off that did they give you for the Springer?

Twolane,

I did take a beating on the Springer.  I got $20,000 real money on trade.  I tried to sell the Springer locally and was asking $23,000 .  I didn't get a single call on it.  Retail on the Ultra , as you know, is 35k.  So the discount I received help take the bite out of the trade in.  I did enjoy riding it home, she has a whopping 43 miles on her now. I may need to lower it some or change the seat, because I can't quite stand flat footed at the stops.  I am short at 5'8' with 30inch inseam.  The Corbin Classic solo w/passenger pad might be the ticket, because it is not as wide as stock.  Corbin also offers that seat in a heated version.

Congrats on your great looking new ride and at "such a deal!"

I too am vertically challenged, but once I put a front & rear lowering kit on my Duracell - Presto!  Fits me like a glove and rides like a dream!

Enjoy,

Hey Stingboy, Did you have your name down for a SERG?  Where you on a cruise last week?  Did you get yours at Granite Mountain?  Actually a transfer from Stone Mountain.

Stine,
Congrats on joining the Geezer Gliders! I too had a Springer, but sold it for different reasons :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:loved that bike. We are the same size and I lowered my 06 1" front and rear and LOVE it! Everyone I asked said don't do it, but I was tip-toed at stops and backing that heavyweight was all I could do. I also put the Bakers floorboard extenders on and have not scraped the boards in corners since the lowering, and we ride 2 up on canyon roads 90% of the time. Ride safe and enjoy.  Dave

Sting,

Great color choice.  I have the same bike/color, only mine is better looking than Pado's  :huepfenlol2:

I had the same problem.... I'm 5'8".  I could get my feet flat on the ground, but the bike was so high that I had trouble backing it.  I had an 02 Ultra before the 08 SEUC and had no problems with the 02.  I think most of the difference with the 08 is in the seat.  The seat looks to be close to 2" thicker and a little wider than the seat on my 02 was.  I am going to try the Corbin Dual Tour seat.  It looks to be a inch or so thinner.

I caution you about lowering the rear of your bike.  I tried the Burley brackets on the rear of mine - they will lower the rear a little over an inch.  This worked well until my wife and I headed out on a trip with the bike loaded with about 30 pounds of luggage.  At highway speed when we hit bumps (bridges) the rear tire touched the fender.  I stopped and increased the air in the rear shocks to approx 30 p.s.i. -this helped some, but the rear tire would still hit the fender on the bigger bumps.

Several of us short folks here have bought the Arnott or Legend Air Ride systems.  These allow you to lower the rear of you bike about two inches and then raise it back up when out on the road.

Try letting some air out of the rear shocks, or at least check to see how much in in them first. To do that Read your Owners Manual and learn about it first before taking stuff off and bolting new stuff on.

You will have to see what they ask for your Springer before you will really know how much discount they gave you on your new ride!  Was the SEUC price contingent upon trade in?   Or was that the price either way?  :nixweiss:
