Am. Iron Atricle on 09 Ultra
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:20:01 PM »

Just got my new American Iron Magazine and they have a big spread on the new Ultra (sorry no CVO) but the article does go into detail about the frame and everything else that is new for this year.

I thought MoCo lost it's mind (again) and added a leather tour pak back on as an option when I saw that cover!  I had to stare at the body painted chick for at least 10 minutes to make sure I was all better.   :P

High points of the article....new frame allows for a 101 lb increase in GVWR.    Old frame is 30 years old and was designed for a 40hp motor.     requires 50% fewer welds and 50 fewer parts to assemble the frame.     frame is 20% stiffer.        All new swing arm that is beefier and will allow larger tire size while only increasing wheelbase by 1/2".   All new IDS which is built in to wheel.      Pulley went from a 66 to a 68 to offset the tall 1st gear.    Can put 5lb's more gear in each bag.     Dunlop even designed a new "multi tread " pattern for all touring bikes.

Again, these are just high points so I apologize for skipping around.

I enjoy the mag too but still recall Chris M's article last year berating one of our bros here at CVO for mentioning the unofficial poll and huge number of 110 leakers. He spent more time in his response finding fault with  the writer than he did addressing the issue at hand. It sounded like the response most were getting from their dealers. I guess he has to remember who butters his bread too. Just leaves a bad taste

I read the article, several interesting points crosses my mind. They point out the the swing arm and rear fender can house a much beefier tire then the stock 180. I wonder how big one could fit. The 180 tire increases GVWR by 15 lbs. I like the idea of the 4 point engine mounting. After reading the article they pointed out much reduced vibrations at idle so i ran outside started up my 08 and at idle grabbed the front brake as they explained in their idle test, and sure enough the vibrations were on. You guys need to try that one, weird. Next time i get around an 09 I'm going to try this test.

They also stated the frame can now handle much more torquer engines then past frame.. em got me thinking twice about installing my 131 in my 08. Darn should I ? As far as rerouting the exhaust to lower the heat, i think we've all done that with either our dual headers or Fat Cats, so I doubt any of us will tell any difference here. And giving the option to turn the Heat managment off and on via throttle, why? Most everyone has deactivated the the auto option anyway.  They re-tuned the suspension for better handling. Would like to know what they did here, maybe fork fluid change up front or different springs? It would be interesting if they share same suspension part numbers. The new frame has 50% less welds, em.. no weld splatter to look at, thats a good improvement. The wheel base is approx 1" longer and they stated this provides a night and day difference in handling, I believe that, but doubt it's night and day. I think the improvements we are doing, i.e. True Trac, or did may equal the difference. This would be an interesting comparison. They state all the improvements are worth the increase in the bikes MSRP. What is the difference? Anyone done this comparsion? All and all, Harley did a bit of changes but is it really worth trading our 07,s and 08's in? Considering the improvements we've done on our own??? That is the question.  ???

I think the changes are all good. I am also happy with my 07 SEUC. I have never felt my frame was a problem. It will take a new motor to make me want to trade. We all know a change is coming, I would hate to drop 15 grand to move up to a 09 only to see another major improvement for 2010. Harley needs to make most of there changes in one year, then make small ones the following years, the same way the auto industry does. It just feels too risky to trade for a 2009. I guess if money is no object, buy a new one every year.

Keeping up with the Jones is expensive, be happy, improve it if you want or not..
I have afriend with a lock stock 2002 FLHR and 105k on the ticker.
It has a nice patina on as he don't believe in washing it either.
I am starting to come around to that way of thinking too.   :P

I'm not sure that we will see alot of changes in 2010....HD made changes to the 110 motor In the 2009 model year....and are planning an improvement campaign for the 110 motors out in the field.

After seeing and riding a 2009 SEUC, I am still happy with my 2008 Duracell!!!
