I find its worth checking that the pins are in correctly before setting off,i nearly lost one but was still in my driveway when my next door neighbour spotted it hanging off.

Went to stealer today. Service manager said " you must not have put it on correctly" . imagine that. I said OK you put the sucker on. After trying for 15 minutes to get the pin to latch he finally said " he would contact corp to try to warranty. I'll let you know what happens. In the mean time I will remove the pins and replace with J nuts and bolts.

 :o :o :o :orange: :orange: :orange:Mystery Solved :orange: :orange: :o :o :o

I found out today why I lost my bag!!!

First week I owned my SE, I had to return to stealer to have quick release pin replaced when it spread and fell out. They did replace the pin but never checked or replaced the spring loaded keeper that it attaches to.

Today I removed those keepers to better secure my bags. After removing the keepers I found that the one that had the replaced pin was bent and dished. The hole that the pin goes through was also wallowed out. That made the hole larger by a significant amount. The spring portion was also bent outward. That put excessive pressure on the end of the pin causing it to allow the ends to bend outward reducing the indent to a straight angle. No detent. Even though durring reinstallation it felt like it was latching properly ther was no way for the pin to stay inplace when exposed to normal road vibrations.

With the enlarged hole in the keeper as the pin end bent and splayed out instead of the pin being captured by the keeper hole it pulled right through. That is why I had trouble removing the pin from the bag after it fell to the road. The pin could not get through the rubber bushing in the bag until I used a vise grip to reshape the end of the pin.

I removed all 4 pins and keepers and used UNISTRUT NUTS which have springs to keep them in place until the bolts are tightened. I used removable thread locker on the bolts.

I am thinking of drilling a small hole in the bolt just behind the nut to allow the insertion of a cotter pin just in case the bolt ever loosens but still allowing quick removal of the bag for cleaning and service.

that is exactly what I was describing when this thread started...  A clevis pin.

Pete,
How do you get enough pressure against the rubber grommet to keep them from rattling using clevis pins?

Fred,
I understood the idea of using a clevis pin but they have to be inserted from the back. I questioned Pete in how you apply enough pressure from behind and insert keeper in front to keep the bag tight to the bracket and not allow rattling.

That is why I used UNISTRUT spring loaded nuts behind the bracket and used a bolt tightened from inside the bag.

It just kinda worked out. The washer you see in the pic is actually a pretty thick spacer and I Dremeled (don't know if thats a real word) a groove using a cut-off wheel so the retaining pin starts off further in and when you push it through it gets tighter. Don't know it that makes sense, but thats how I got it to work.

The groove cut in is deeper towards the center and levels out. When you put the cotter pin in, it starts kind of angled in towards outside of bag, then when it exits the clevis it is guided onto the groove on the other side of the spacer. It takes a little pressure to slide it through and this keeps tension on it.
