Ltank~
"....I see you have a 1" belt with the rubber flap and a small amount of space near the wheel. My question is if the rubber flap was removed will a 1 1/8" belt work? I ordered a S&S high strength belt and pulley. I tried to find a 1 1/16" belt and pulley but found
20mm , 7/8" , 1" 1 1/8" narrower belts. S&S did not make a 1 1/16" belt. Great Article!...."
Just so you know in the photo above that is actually a OEM HD BELT which came on the 1999 FXR2 and it was the 133T 1 1/2" WIDE BELT!!!!
The NARROWER belt that you are talking about is actually the 1 1/8" WIDE BELT, for this year and for this model the OEM STANDARD belt width is actually 1 1/2" Wide. IF YOU CHOOSE to desire to run a 1 1/8" NARROWER belt you have to select a 1 1/8" WIDE REAR SPROCKET to work with that size belt. There is no requirement to change the Transmission Sprocket/Pulley regardless of whether you choose to run a 1 1/2" NORMAL WIDTH belt or a 1 1/8" NARROWER Belt.
In the above photo you also noticed that with that particular tire I chose to run I was indeed using the rubber deflector "flap" which attaches to the belt deflector guard. Since that photo was taken I began running a 143 MM AVON VENMUM tire which was a bit wider than even that tire shows and had to remove a "PORTION" of the rubber belt deflector "flap" guard to the the point where the tire and the belt deflector rubber "flap" piece were touching....I cut that rubber deflector "flap" piece at a angle back to one rivet location, if that makes sense and was able to still use the rest of the attached rubber deflector "flap" guard and leave it attached to the belt deflector guard.
Based upon the engine size you are running I certainly would question the merits of going much narrower than a 1 1/8" wide belt.
Perhaps my photo confused you, if you go back through this entire discussion the guys were discussing the merits of using a 1 1/8" belt vs the standard OEM width of 1 1/2" wide belt. It just may appear in the photo that my belt is only 1" wide but that is the misgivings of the illusion of photography. HD is running many of the later bikes now with 1 1/8" wide belts vs the 1 1/2" width they typically ran with back in 1999.
ltank, if things like this get confusing, sometimes just going back to a HD dealer and asking for certain part numbers and asking additional questions will clarify certain specifics that you might need which might prove helpful to you.
Anyway I know this will clear up your confusion.
To further clarify, photos in posts # 14, #19 and #23 above in this THREAD show references to the narrower belt and rear sprocket size as well. All of these photos are showing the 1 1/8" application belt size while the photo in post #23 shows the 1 1/8" rear sprocket as well which accommodates the 1 1/8" belt. Of course there are various styles of rear sprockets for a 1 1/8" application, the one depicted in this photo is a THUNDERSTAR styled billet styled 1 1/8" NARROWER Rear Sprocket.
Also given that I just did a modification to gearing in May of 2012 which there is a photo tutorial of that project also located within this website (mentioned for those of you reading this thread years from now) I replaced my OEM 1 1/2" 65T Rear Sprocket with a HD OEM 70T 1 1/2" Rear Sprocket given that I knew I would never venture to install anything wider than a 140MM Advertised Rear Tire. I just decided for my personal preferences not to ever go beyond the 140 Advertised Width for a tire, if I had, the time to make such a decision would have been at the point of the gear change modification.

Tim
