What happens if you buy used bike with SERT and no dongle?
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:17:20 PM »

Now that there are many bikes with SERTs, I was wondering what happens when you buy a used bike and don't know about the SERT and don't get the dongle?  What are the options?  I guess buying a late model HD will require checking this somehow especially in an older bike.

I'd think you would have to buy another sert or the tts system to make any changes.  I don't think there is a provision to replace a lost or damaged dongle.  Be nice if there were.

I wasn't sure if a new one could connect with the old one locked.
Can the dealers laptop connect without using the dongle?

I'm with UtraXfr-

You can't make any changes to the bike's SERT without the dongle that is married to it (if you ever need/want to make changes in the SERT)..  When on a trip, you should probably carry the dongle just in case.

I don't think the ECM is particular about who it talks to, but once the SERT (dongle) talks to an ECM, then it won't talk to any other ECM. So buying a bike with a SERT, but not getting the dongle is just like buying any other bike. If you wanted a SERT at that point you would have to go buy a new one. Unless you could locate the existing dongle...

As I learned yesterday...

If you don't have the adapter/dongle/key then you have no SERT.

You can say your bike was tuned with a SERT but the bike technically doesn't have a SERT.

If I sell my sled I plan on taking a picture of my dongle which has the VIN number written on it by the dealership and will list it as one of the items included.

You must have the dongles to tune, and it is my prefrence to carry the dongle at all times. It stays in the saddle bag along with the cable. And on long trips i bring along a 10 inch portable lap top.. And i have had to use it on occasion.

And remember, if your dongle stays hard for more than 4 hours forget about calling a doctor, call a hooker.

If your dongle has sex with a hooker unwillingly, is it considered rape or shoplifting?     :nixweiss:

What do you call a hooker with a runny nose?

OK, I know that I'm in trouble with this question, but are all dongles the same?  I've located the "interface" plug looking thing for my '06 CUSE, but I don't find a similar device for my '07.  Would the cable have been different with an integral dongle for the '07 bike?
