Just got charged $230 for my 110 Recall
« on: August 29, 2008, 07:49:55 PM »

So I take the bike in for my Recall and they said they don't cover the rings, which I read before here, I ask how much? They say about $50 bucks for two sets. I figure ok, not worth the bother. So the bike has been there for four days, no calls or anything to update me on the status. I call everyday, wait on hold, get hung up on and told it would be done today.

So I go down there to pick it up and he said "OK the total for the rings and base gaskets is $230". I say hmm, aren't the base gaskets included? He said "we sent your cylinders out to be honed and the cost of labor comes to 2.4 labor"

I just gave them my credit card and walked away, never to go back.

Unbelievable to say the least.

Even though they are commonly only barely responsive you guys that getting charges for the factory allowed repair have to complain to corporate.  Someone has to know that dealers aren't just padding a little they're writing fiction to get pizza money for the shop.

They suck for not doing the right thing, but in accordance with their PP, they don't owe you rings, pistons, or cylinders. I'd have done the same thing and want new rings. And they did the right thing by recross-hatching your cylinders for the new rings to seat in. But I would've fought all that out upfront. Be aware that if you ask them for anything more than what's in the PP, you better discuss any costs upfront, and fight like hell to get them to do the right thing! Whether on their dime or the MoCo's!!! But in the end, be prepared to pay for ANYTHING extra to the PP! FTW!!!, FTF!!! and FTD!!! ;)

Can you believe that a (supposedly) modern dealership is saying they have to send cylinders out for honing?  How much you want to bet that's a nice labor charge for a few minutes spent with a drill motor and a ball hone?

That's the problem these days. Most of em can't and don't BUILD engines anymore. And they're not tooled for it anymore! They just bolt on parts. They don't measure em, or clearance em. Just take em off HD's highly efficient preclearanced QC system, and bolt it together!!! Scary chit!!! ::) :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

They didn't just ball hone them or stone hone them in a drill. They sent them to their other store which has a full machine/Race shop. I'm sure they were honed with a machine shop type hone. (bar hone or whatever it's called). I seriously wouldn't mine paying $100 bucks or so, but $230 seems excessive.

And my pipe hits the brake pedal, so I have to go reposition that AND they washed my clean bike and spotted the crap out of it.

Hey, but my rear cylinder isn't seeping oil anymore.

I have met many Harley employees this week and have been in 5 different dealerships.
A common theme I hear is that they are aware of this website and read it quite a bit.
Hoist with all your FTF, FTW, FTD I wish you luck on the road should you ever have to stop at a dealer that monitors the website and they recognize you.
I'm sure you don't care but I would hate to see your bike disappear into a service department knowing that they monitor the site.
That's a recipe for disaster!

In June, just prior to the recall, I had the head gaskets replaced on my bike. They proceeded to take the cylinders off to replace the base gaskets, so I asked them if they where going to replace the rings. They told me not so I called Customer Service and asked them how they could expect old rings to reseat into the cylinders. They decided to do the right thing and replace the rings but I would call Customer Service and complain. They can not be taking your cylinders off, distrubing your ring/cylinder seating and expect no problems puting the cylinders back on without a rehone and new rings.

I have seen the notice the dealer gets for the head recall. I would think it would be the same for the gasket replacement recall also. They are supposed to do a leakdown test to see if the bike needs rings. If it does they can get authorization to do them.

Yeah, and I bet they also think we're FOS about the problems they left us with too. Woo Hoo, I'm shakin in my boots now! HD skeered of lil ole Hoist makin noise about the MoCo's junk!!! Even though lil ole Hoist loves his HD's and has spent hundreds of thousands over the past years on em! I think it's you that's FOS!!! You can just go on kissing their ass!!! And you should be embarrassed about that, not my speaking out!!! ;)

And BTW, since I blew off their W.....ty, and pay for my own stuff, do they really care? I doubt it very much. You're giving me way too much credit! But if there's any semblence of truth in what you said, it might be having some impact. And if more people were as knowledgable, passionate and outspoken about the inadequacies of these current machines, they might be more inclined to listen to these people and bring up their quality! But they count on the bolt on chrome cover folks that don't know much, or ride much, to make up the bulk of their customer base. Not hardcore diehard performance HD enthusiasts! And after all, lil ole Hoist can't change the world all on his own can he? Well GD, maybe he can!!! ::) ;D

Hoist! 8)

Oh and BTW, as long as they're reading this, they can go back and read all 15K posts and see the story of how all this developed and why I feel this way now. Didn't start off that way when I bought Cybil. And I doubt anyone here qualifies to get their bikes fixed under w.....ty with the mods we make! Bottom line, they love taking our $$$ and will continue to do so as long as we keep handing it over, regardless of what we say about em. And any publicity is good publicity!
