Problems discoverd during enhancement
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:14:36 PM »

Well I got a call from the dealer today.  I have a cracked Y pipe found during the recall/enhancement.  Now I have to wait another 2 weeks to get my bike back.  The part is not scheduled to be here until next Tuesday the 16th.  They said I could get my bike but I might have problems with how it runs.   :soapbox: :soapbox: :soapbox: WTF - between the enhancement my heated grips and now this cracked pipe my bike has been in the shop almost a month this year.  I am starting to think that Harley dealers are no different than car dealers.  Well wait except it takes a fuc@#%g week to get anything fixed and nothing is in stock.  I don't like leaving my bike at a dealership just sitting there - it makes me nervous.  IT BELONGS HERE AT HOME IN MY GARAGE LEAKING OIL ONTO MY FLOOR.

Has anyone else had problems discovered during the recall/enhancement.

One more of these :soapbox:!!

Ask your dealer if he has any used stock y-pipes laying around...
They must have changed a set of pipes or 2 lately!
2 weeks for a common part?

Sorry your having to wait, I have pre-paid maintenance on my bike and on a 10,000 mile service they found a cracked Y pipe.  Latus motors in Portland had it fixed the same day.

I forgot to mention about my heated grips as well. When Chief & I (OK, Chief) were working on the bike, we noticed that when the dealer fixed the grips they wired them into the accessory switch instead of under the fairing. Nice little short cut they took that has now cost me the use of the accessory plug under the seat.

My thought exactly.  I guess this dealer has never installed a set of Rinehardts or V&H Duals.  And unless someone has been stealing pipes from the warehouse to sell for scrap, like folks have been stealing catalytic convertors and copper wiring, I seriously doubt it really takes two weeks to get a headpipe.  What may be happening is what happened to me a few years back on a special order; the dealership held the order until it had a large number of parts to order, and then included everything on their regular stock order.  There are different order methods, with the regular stock orders being slowest but cheaper for the dealer, then different levels of "special" orders that involve loss of dealer discounts or actual surcharges.

Needless to say, I never had that particular dealer order another part for me, after letting him know what I thought of his cheap chit way of doing business.  If I remember correctly, I was paying full MSRP for a seat and backrest, but waiting a month so the dealer could get a 10% discount that he didn't pass along.  The only reason I stumbled onto the real issue was my background in automotive parts and service, and a parts counter guy accidently letting me see the order records.  Gotta love those dealers.

Jorge, I'm still scratching my head over that one.  Did they tell you what part had the "flaking paint".  I wonder if they are talking about some of the powder coat on a cylinder or head, which some folks have reported, or if they just scraped/scratched something during the "upgrade" process.

Sorry you are having the problems.

Thanks Roger -------- T Mac, it does suck for your bike to be down that long, especally with winter coming on. We went out last night and it was the first time I've worn my coat this year. I just don't understand how my leather coat shrunk hanging in the closet all summer.   :'(

Ask the dealer to order it as a down bike part and HD will ship it over night to them.  Or have the pipe welded and ride it till the part gets hear.  Or give you a demo to ride.

Now there's a man who speaks from experience. :2vrolijk_21:

They can do any of the above and have you back on the road right away.....if they're inclined to.
