Drilling Cats out of Stock Mufflers
« on: September 06, 2008, 04:28:52 PM »

I've read previous posts about drilling the cats out of stock CVO mufflers by using a 1.6" core bit.  Where can one purchase such a bit?  I can't seem to find one.

Or, is there someone that has purchased a core bit for this purpose and would be willing to let me borrow it?  I would be willing to pay for the shipping both ways plus a little extra.

I drilled mine out with a 3/4 in carbide bit and then chisled out the remainder.  It took a while but was not too bad.  I tried a 1 1/2in hole saw, but the material in the cat kept grabbing it.  It was easier when I drilled out the middle.

Good luck.

I used a chisel, a mallet, and a set of needlenose pliers. Took a little time, but wasn't hard to do. Just have a shopvac handy to vaccuum the dust that it creates so you can see what you're hammerin. Take off the endcap so you don't mark it up. While I had the endcap off, I sawzalled the tailpipe section down a couple inches so it looks better when you put the cap back on.

Can't you just pull the guts out the end of the muffler and get to it that way? Just curious.

No, the easiest way is with a core bit, but if you don't have one, the most cost effective way is whatever primitive tools you have.

I know previous posts have mentioned a 1.6" core bit.  All I can seem to locate is a 1.5".  I can't imagine that a tenth of an inch will make any difference.  By the way, the core bit I am looking at says it's for cement.  It's on eBay.  Here's the link.

Any reason this won't work?

So if I may ask a stupid question just what does it do for the muffler, better sound better flow or both?

From previous posts on this site about this issue I would say a little of both.

Zeb, is right, a little of both.  I later took a 1.5"  whole saw on a drill motor and drilled the back end of the baffle.  Not all the way into, but just opened it up a bit.  After that they did flow better and they were louder.  Did not really like the sound.  Sent the mufflers to Steve at Fullsac and he put the 1.75" baffles in.  The added back pressure was definately a help and the sound it good.  Maybe not as deep as some SE mufflers, but sounds good.  We can still listen to the stereo running down the highway.

I spent most of the day working on mufflers.  This morning I drilled out the cats on the stock CVO's then after lunch I took off my Monster Ovals and installed the stockers (less the cats).  Backed it out of the garage and fired it up.  I can't even describe the sound it was so bad.  Horrible!  It didn't even sound like a motorcycle.  I rode about 5-6 miles, came home and ran it back in the garage.  I just finished putting the Monster Ovals back on.  Damn, I'm getting godd at flipping these mufflers!   :)  I do like the look of the stock mufflers so I guess I might have to order a set of baffles from Fullsac and give that a try.

My ''06 SE Ultra is for sale under the "Selling" thread.  Would someone please buy my bike and relieve me of this misery!!!
