type of oil for breakin period
« on: September 12, 2008, 01:37:06 AM »

i know there must be a thread for this so if someone wants to direct me, i wont wast a lot of your time.

my wrench says adamantly that a new engine should be worn in with harley recommended oil for somewhere around 1k to 3k miles before putting in the synthetics that we all discuss (mobile, amsoil etc.).  is that true?

i just got my bottom end redone and all the bushings and seals are new and need to run her as if she was new for awhile

All CVO bikes come from the factory with SYN3 in them - but I'm not sure about standard production bikes. If you're buying a CVO, you're starting out with SYN3 aready in it.

IMO:
oil is oil, and a better oil is always better during breaking or hard riding.   :nixweiss:

I'm leaving the SYN3 in mine  changed it out at 50 and I'll  run it for the first 500,   that chi*'s so bad, it's got to be good for break-in...  then on to Amsoil, Greg

I ran the first 1000 on Syn3 and then changed them all to AMSOil (3 different type).

i think that is because the factory dyno tunes them before they leave the factory. Since this is effectively new, i was thinking that regular oil for breakin  is best??

First, the factory doesn't "dyno tune" the bikes before they leave the factory.  They run them for a very short time on what looks like a chassis dyno, just to make sure they will in fact run, the controls work, and nothing falls off right away.  There is no tuning involved, and this process takes place with synthetic oil in the CVO's.

If synthetic oil is good enough to be initial fill for folks like Porsche, BMW, etc., I'm pretty sure it is good enough for a Harley.  If you intend to dump the initial oil fairly quickly, like 500 miles or so, go with dino oil as a cost savings, then change to a good synthetic.  Live long and prosper.

Jerry on our last rip to the factory we could not see the touring assembly line since it was closed down. We got to tour the new Softail assembly facility. In the softail assembly line the robot actually puts the bike on a dyno. It is run on the dyno for a few minutes they actually check the HP and TQ numbers on each and every bike that is assembled up there. The numbers are stored for future refrence as is all of the assembly info.

thanks for the thoughts guys.  This is the kind of sh_t that i just never know what to make of since everyone has a different opinion.  i think i will just go with the Harley syn for 1000 and then dump the amsoil etc. into after that. No big deal, just curious since the wrench seemed to have his own strong opinion.

That's different than a "dyno tune" Mike.  The dyno, or rolls test as we called it in the car business, is run for a very short time just to verify the bike (or car) runs, doesn't throw any failure codes, has good oil pressure, etc., and that it meets certain minimum requirements.  I didn't want anyone to think each bike was actually tuned individually.  They all get the one and only approved calibration in the ECM.
