Detachable Tourpak 2007 Jester
« on: September 16, 2008, 02:21:37 AM »

I decided to make my tourpak detachable.  I had been considering trading my bike in on a different model, I was thinking real hard about a road king.  Now that we have kids long distance touring is not going to happen for a while.  I wanted to have something that I could cruise shorter trips with.  I went over to the dealership last Thursday and was considering trading, looked at quite a few 09's.  I liked the road kings alot the new bigger tire on the bike is sharp but my eye kept coming back to the street glide.  I liked the way it looked.  I finally decided that I liked the street glide and wanted to bring my wife back for a test ride.  Well they were having a band that night and there were probally 100 bikes in the parking lot.  I went outside and the first bike I noticed was my Black and Orange Jester, the sun was just sparkling off the front fender.  It was the nicest bike in the parking lot (IMHO) and it was my bike.  On the ride home I knew that I wanted to keep my bike and remembered a thread that discussed removing the tourpak.  So I did a search and as always found alot of information.  Thanks To All That Posted with information on this topic.

I went for a 100 mile trip this afternoon after I finished completing the detachable tourpak.  The ride was Awesome!  What a difference it makes.  I did not realize how much the tourpak makes the bike's center of gravity more top heavy.  I noticed the difference at the first stop.  The front of the bike also felt much more in contact with the road especially in the curves.  The bike handled so much better.  As I rode I was trying to think of a comparison - the best way I can describe it is the difference we feel when we have a rider on the bike and when we don't.  Now the tourpak probally weighs around 50lbs and a rider weighs 150lbs avg but the tourpak is higher so it makes the bike lean more dramatic.  The is the best way I can think to describe it.

The only con I see is you loose the storage of the tourpak and the rider doesn't have the large backrest.  I have ordered a sissy bar and will be picking it up tomorrow.  I hope my wife likes it if not then I can attach the tourpak when she rides.  It appears that the tourpak has also moved back and inch or two and that should give the rider a little more room.  I hope to take my wife for a ride on Thurs. or Fri. and will give a report on the sissy bar and the detachable tourpak on.

I tried to take pictures that were the same shots and angles to give a good reference.  The seat is a corbin dual tour it is a little large but my wife will be riding alot so I don't think I will consider changing it anytime soon.  It will be interesting see how sissy bar looks with the seat.  The seat also is a little high because of the wires that are tucked underneath the seat.  I rode today without sound and I miss it.  I am thinking real hard about getting the Hawg Wired setup from Jim for 4 in the front.  I am going to hook my front speakers up without amp and see how it sounds but from what I have read here Hawg Wired is the only way to go.

First pic bike still has tourpak mounted

Everthing is pretty much just plug-unplug.

Detachable mount plate on tourpak.  The job was pretty simple and straigtforward.  The hardest part was reading the installation instructions I just gave up and looked at the schematic drawing.

Taped the wires so they would fit under seat

Wires under seat.  The seat does not quite fit snug with this large bundle of wires but does fit pretty well.  The corbin seat has a large hole underneath to tuck the wires under.  I really think I am going to get rid of these wires and go with Hawg Wired upfront I don't really get that much sound out of the back speakers anyway.

OK before someone says something the shoe was to raise the bike up - I had a difficult time putting the detachable pin on the left side of the bike because of the weight.
It's my wife's shoe ;D

Backrest on with chrome plate (Thanks AJ!)  at first I didn't really like the chrome plate but as the day went on it really grew on me.

I will also pick up the lay down license plate bracket tomorrow when I get the sissy bar.  Last pic is of my ipod nano.  Alot of folks have talked about having a holder for their ipod.  My wife bought me a nano last Christmas.  It holds about 240 songs and clips right onto the cable.  I chose a different color for the in-line so that I would not forget it was there.

I don't think I would have considered this option without all the info I find here so Thanks Again for all previous post :2vrolijk_21:
