How did it go when he left LSU, something similar no? I do not recall.

To my knowledge, there were no accusations of lying cast at Saban during his transition from LSU to the Dolphins.  From winning the national championship at LSU, the natural next step up was the NFL.  The Dolphins offered Saban a bunch of money for thie "promotion" so he took it.  Were the LSU people upset?  Sure, but if they were honest, they'd have to admit they understood  At the time, that is.  And I'm sure some of them will sing the "disloyalty" song for a long time. ::)

As it turned out I think Saban and Spurrier have a lot in common.  they both reached the top of Everest in the college ranks then found out that football in the NFL is a different language altogether.  While (IMO) Spurrier has never had the "fire in the belly" at USC that he had at Florida (and also recognizing the difference in recruiting ability at South Carolina versus most of the rest of the neighboring SEC), Saban may have.  We'll see in the next few weeks.

Good catch.  I had that in the original post but somehow it got edited out--by me. :o

The guy was well liked there.  Won't see another one like him.

I like the 8 game playoff deal.  As to who chooses the 8 teams ?? but no more than 2 from any conference, regardless.

Also, all conferences should be limited to a total of 10 teams.  This inner conference playoff BS is a bunch of BS for $$.  10 teams per conference - play all 9 opponents & no playoff for conference title.

Bryant coached at Union College, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Texas A&M, and U. of Kentucky before Alabama.
Woody Hayes coached at Denison University and Miami of Ohio prior to Ohio State.
Bo Schembechler coached at Presbyterian College, Bowling Green, Northwestern, and Ohio State before Michigan.

Knute Rockne, you got me there.  He went from student to graduate to coach, all at Notre Dame.  Paterno played quarterback at Brown before getting an Assistant Coach job at Penn State.  He's been there ever since.

I agree but that's not what's happening.  Witness the expansion of the ACC, SEC, Big Ten (11 teams ::)) and Big Twelve (Big Eight+4) conferences, the demise of the once-mighty Southwest Conference, and the ongoing fight for relevance of the Big East and Conference USA, not to mention the WAC, MWC, and other non-BCS D1A conferences,   Again, it's all about money and the BCS and the NCAA have a lot of it at stake.  They're not likely to back off.  The schools that enjoy major conference affiliation like it ($$$) too, and want the gravy train to continue.

It's been rumoured for years that the SEC will again expand, taking in West Virginia in the Eastern Division and one of the Texas schools (UT, or A&M most likely) in the Western Division.  This would cause a domino effect of impact felt among other conferences.

Nope, contrary to yours (and mine) thinking, the BCS envisions fewer "Superconferences" of many members and divisions.  More money to be made with conference championship games.

Yep.  Hayes was head coach at OSU from 1951-1978.  Schembechler was an assistant there twice under Hayes.  Once during the 1951-52 season and again from 1958-1962.

Who knows.  Maybe they started their rivalry as boss and underling. :nixweiss:

Yeah, it is heading the other way.  College football is semi-pro & has been for a while.  I be a dinosaur & stuck in my old fogey ways.  I prefer the old Southwest Conference type days & regionalized conferences as opposed to gerrymandered ratings created conferences of $$ paydays to line the pockets of the big time salary grabbers & such. Plus the announcers suck more now than they used to, but that's beside the point.

I remember when Arkansas left for greener $$ pastures in the SEC & they spent many a year in the hinterland of far, far away from a conference championship.  It led to the destruction of the SW conference - the Big 12, SEC, Big 11 et al is a dumb idea made dumber by adding more teams to these "superconferences" that allow teams to beat hell out of lesser t1eams since there is not a 12 team conference with 12 championship level teams or even close.

I will ride away quietly on my brontosaurus now......

Ok, so what about Tom Osborn or Daryll Royal ?  Ara Parsegian ?

Aha, the lighbulb comes on . What was the name of the Grambling coach ?  Eddie Robinson was it ?  Wasn't he the only coach they ever had till he retired ?

Heck, this is fun.  You thought of two more single-place coaches.  Osborne and Robinson.

Tom Osborne was a wide receiver in the NFL at Washington and San Francisco before starting at Nebraska as an unpaid assistant in 1964.  Became head coach in 1973 and stayed until 1997.  So, yes, Nebraska was his only coaching job.

Darrell Royal coached the CFL Edmonton Eskimos in 1953, Mississippi State in 54-55, Washington in 1956, and U. of Texas from 1957-1976.

Ara Parseghian coached at Miami-Ohio, and Northwestern before coaching at Notre Dame from 1964-1974.

Eddie Robinson coached at Grambling for 56 years straight.  The only place he ever coached.  1941-1997.
