I bought the ESP with my 07SE Ultra. After having to do so much to the bike to get it to run right and not leak, it became apparent I could probably never get them to honor it. So I canceled it and got most of my money back. Besides, none of the dealers could fix my bike while it was under factory warranty... why would I think that would be any different after the ESP kicked in?  8)

FYI
It's my understanding that Jenni can get you an ESP at 20% off

I always thought you could buy an extended warranty up to 2 years of the orignal sale date? IMO if something is defective it will show up within the first year. KB

As was the case with the older style cam chain adjusters, they didn't start to let go until sometime after 18k miles. In some cases as much as 40k  AND, the MoCo would not pay to replace worn ones, but would cover the replacement (and upgrade) if they chit the bed and took out the cam and oil pump etc with them. Having an ESP on Elvis got me about a $3k motor rebuild free of charge (ok less $50)

I have owned 30 Harleys - only two of them new - both CVO's - the 01 FXDWG2, and the 06 FLTHCUSE.  The 01 paid for itself after the factory dropped.  Then I traded it to a friend for a tricked out 02 Road King (pearl white/slammed to the ground/96incher) only HD my wife said "don't sell that bike"  oh well I did not listen.  Anyhow my buddy proceded to use all HD parts and had a $10k motor built by the local HD dealer.  The motor exploded and the extended  was used to pay for it (as it was) still a hotrod.

My 06 SE Ultra has 51k on it.  I smoked the rear exhaust valve on the last 50 miles of a 1250 mile day ( still made it to the house on one cylinder) at 40,000 miles.  The extended paid for this - probably a $2500 out of pocket if I had to pay.  The bottom line is this - I can change the fluids, and even dabble into a few other things here and there.  With the computers, fuel injection, and expense of every nut, bolt screw, and labor on this thing I highly recommend the warranty.

Even the FXDWG2 had many minor issues repaired under this warranty before I transferred it to my friend.  Like the other post - a dice roll.  For me the extended has been a wise decision both times.  I hope to keep the 06 for awhile - but next time I get a new HD - I will definately by the extended - If they will still sell it to me.

Ride Safe

David Mitchell

PS - I have 51k on my 06 103 - does anybody think I need to have the CamChainTensioner examined?

30 Harleys and what; over 50,000 miles on every one em ? And 1250 mile days.

That's at least 1,500,000 miles ridden. Impressive. You've got to be the Iron Butt King of the Universe

In case you're interested somewhere around here is a thread in which many of us fondly listed all of the motorcycles we've owned over the years.Your list would make for interesting reading.

Does a bear sh*t in the woods? The answer is YES! They can go at any time. I have seen them go in as little as 16K and also have checked some at 50K that were gone but not yet to metal. It is a crap shoot and the odds are that they will be shot or very close to it.

Thanks for the compliment - I don't brag I just ride.  I will try to find that thread.  I have a job that I can ride - so I am very fortunate - got my first HD at 12 - my Dad bought me one of those 500lb italian dirt bikes.  Then a year later bought me a basketcase - an old 45 with a suicide shift.  Wish I still had it.  Was not a good bike for me at that time due to my youthful exuberance.  Oh well the list goes on - but my email is posted I ride primarily - FL, AL, MS, LA, AR - but have ridden all over the country.  But these are the states I work.  As far as miles - I know I have popped a mil - but not a mil and a half - some of the bikes were just owned for short periods till I got something I Liked better.

I've forgotten what the title of the thread was. Maybe somebody can help out. Sure would like to read the list. And 1,000,000 miles is still impressive. I figure I've got 1/2 that and consider myself a serious rider. Welcome aboard. Look forward to reading your posts

I am a believer in the extended warranties.  My last bike (2002 low rider) I bought the 7 year warranty.  In 2006 I had 50,000 km's and had to get $1,800.00 worth of repairs in one shot.  My dealer said the warranty is worth it for people that do not put on very many miles, or people that do put a lot of miles on the bike.  I bought an '07 SE Dyna and went for the 7 year warranty again.  It is a lot of money to put out, but I think it is worth it for me and piece of mind.

My husband has had to pay for quite a few repairs along the way (he didn't get the warranty) on his '99 Electra Glide and that also prompted me to get the warranties.

I think it all depends on the mileage you put on though.

I had a nail in my tire and got a new tire put on with the warranty, it has already saved me $450.00 (Cdn)  I think you have to buy the nail/tire package with the warranty?

Few weeks back a friend of mine who has a 06 CVO Ultra was on his way back from the 105th.  Crossing into North Dakota his 103 motor went south,  cam bearings.  The price for a new motor was around 6,000.00  He did not have an extended warranty.  He is now buying a 09 Ultra and bought the extended warranty.  My 07 CVO Ultra has the extended warranty and like others I wouldn't leave home without it.

The extended warranty can always be purchased when the factory warranty is about to expire.  It costs a bit more, but is still available and is the same coverage from HD.  The best deal out there is the tire coverage, one flat or road hazard and you more than made your money back. My wife recently bought an 08 FLSTN , and thats what we did....bought the tire coverage and will wait on the extended warranty.....who knows what she will want in 2010 !
