Side Cover Chipped by Dealer
« on: September 28, 2008, 06:16:18 PM »

2007 CVO Road King Candy Colalt Blue. Dealer doing recall, Detailer chipped side cover with Power Washer (washer tip hit side cover). The size of the chip was approximately 5/8" X 1/4". The Dealer sent the cover out to their painter, painted the entire cover and the cover came back with the Candy Cobalt Blue much darker than original. The Dealer is ordering a new side cover from HD. I do not believe the color of the new cover ordered from HD will match the rest of my bike. What would you do if you were me if the HD cover does not match?

Take it to a body shop that has a reputable paint crew.  When my 07 fairing was damaged in my trailer, I took it to a body shop in my home town.  They stated that with their computer matching system, they guaranteed a 95% match in color.  He said the newer the bike the higher the probability of matching, so with mine he said that there was probably a 98% and they matched the electric orange perfectly.

You might me surprised - I'd bet the color match is pretty good.  But if it isn't, tell them to keep trying.  They damaged it, it's up to them to get it right...

A better question might be what the heck were they doing with a power washer near your bike in the first place!

The new cover from the factory will be a good match. Don't worry about it. That your dealer worked to the effort they did to make good on this is a plus. As noted above, that the had a power washer near your bike in the first place is bad. Once you get your new side cover, ask to meet with the GM and express your satisfaction with the way his folks handled this and then suggest that using a power washer without customer consent is a bad idea in the first place

Addressed the Power Washer upon receipt of the bike, headlamp has 1.5" standing water in it, right turn indicator.5" standing water also. I asked the Dealer if it was washed or submerged. With regard to have them keep trying, this does not work for me, if the HD replacement does not match, I will be requesting replacement of all tins. Please keep in mind, this was a HD recall that initiated the visit, and a HD Dealer that created the situation

The chance of getting all new tins is nil and seems out of bounds......they can match the side cover, even if they have to try a couple of times.

Remember to be reasonable in you requests.  All you really want is a matching side cover. and I am sure they can get that done.

I had my Bushtec painted by a custom body shop and with their computer color gadjet they nailed it, all three of the triple reds. We all thought the bottom color was black, but it was actually a very dark shade of red. He said with fading the factory paint propably wouldn't match a nine year old bike even if he could get it.  I would think a 07 wouldn't be a problem for the factory.

By the was has anyone cracked the factory color codes yet ??  My painter got no cooperation from them at all. Doc

I think that the factory cover will match but if not a good body shop should be able to match it up. Asking for all new tin is maybe a bit harsh , and I have to think it won't happen. The dealer is being straight up with you trying to make it right reciprocate.

Understood, no doubt I am being unreasonable. However, 5 motors, prior to the recall, my tolerance and or patience with HD and or Dealers is not what it once was.

I gave them the damaged cover to repair and the other cover for matching so matching would not be a problem. Failure is failure is it not?

Don't have the codes GD but do at least have the color names.  Midnight red is the darkest.  Luxury Rich Red is the middle shade.  Tudor Red is the last of the three.  Have tried to find paint codes for these colors but have so far struck out.
