The systems that use the loops work on hysteresis sensors that detect changes in the earths magnetic field. You can put an old speaker magnet under your frame and try to stop directly over the wire that forms the loop. Rare earth or neodymium magnets are preferred because of their relative field strength or "Tesla".
Here locally, Indiana has a lot of camera based systems installed on state roads that connect to a computer and see changes in just a few pixels of the image where you stop.

On a side note, I just figured out why my phone began hanging up on everyone when I removed it from the belt pouch. The magnets in the flap of my new pouch trigger the reed switch that detects when the phone is opened and answers the call and then hangs up.    :D

Our town has some camera based systems, but some don't seem to see me. Now, probably rumor, but I HEARD that flashing lights on emergency vehicles will quick-trip the system, and that it's ILLEGAL to flash your high beams to fake the system. I do have a friend occasionally on the other side of the street, at whom I flash my high beams, and maybe it's my imagination, but the light always seems to change just as I'm trying to get his attention. I'm sure it's my imagination. :nixweiss: But I only try to get his attention on days like Sunday morning when there's no other cars and I'm just sittin' there anyway.

Radio operated.

The systems uses a receiver and transmitter to control the intersection. Working correctly you will have 3 reds and a green for the E vehicle.

How about just going after you've waited the time for an extra cycle or two?  Always worked for me.

Works for me..... :beerchug:

We turn the bike off, then back on ... sometimes this works.  All times, eventually you have to go somewhere.  Reporting it allows for a permanent fix, this is especially helpful if the offending light is in your often direction of travel.

Hmm, so that would be one way to tell if it's actually happening. If so, that's not a good thing at all, and I'll never do it again.  :-[

Have one on my KLR, they are rare earth magnets - save your $$ the don't work.  I have it correctly mounted and oriented and the KLR just doesn't have the mass to trip the induction loop.  The SERK does, much more metal then my KLR.

NC allows you to break the red after 3 mins...but who the hell knows when you got there.  Suppose if there was a PO sitting there I would wait the 3 mins, but the rest of the time I check around, make sure I am not gonna be T-boned and scoot out.

And these do work, has anyone in the UK tried these?

Having a softail with even less mass, I've tried a number of these magnet things, even the so called best of the best, and I'm not sure they do much. In fact, I've found stronger magnets at the hardware store for only a few bucks - so I'd recommend trying that first, if you're so inclined.

You're not originally from Naples, Italy are you?   ???  That's how they look at traffic lights over there; just for personal amusement.  It was a trip driving over there.

You guys are talking my language...these device are what I sell for a living! There is a lot of correct and incorrect info in this thread...I'll add my two-cents for what it's worth.

If you see a loop cut in the road (typically a 6 x 6 cut), that is a loop that detects changes in inductance. Try to position your bike directly over one of the lines. It usually will work assuming everything is OK with the detector card and the loop is intact. *this is the big problem with loops...they short out and fail frequently! Most traffic controllers have a max call time on side street lights during the day (usually 300 seconds) and the light will change regardless of the presence of a vehicle. However--that isn't always the case. Depending on the street and typical volume...the controller may never place a call to the side street unless it detects a vehicle because the traffic engineer made a decision to allow the arterial street to keep the green unless specifically asked to release it. (this is typical for evening modes...you might notice the greens stay green longer late at night)

Then there are video detection systems...which use a camera that looks down into the approach and detects the presence based on what it perceives as changes to the "static field" that is drawn for each approach corridor. They usually work pretty well (I do not sell these)...unless the camera is broken or the wind has mis-aligned it. If it isn't working, nothing you can do to make this work...you just have to bust the light. (most people I talk to assume these cameras are red light running cameras...they are not)

Finally...changing the light to green by flashing your high-beams....not likely. This is the Opticom system which detects an infrared signal that is data encoded. It doesn't actually look for the visible light; but the coded bursts between the visible light. So high beams are useless. The EMS vehicle has a special emitter that sends the proper signal to the intersection to create a preempt. It is now a federal law against obtaining an emitter that can change the light unless you are an authorized agency. Most communities enable the security feature in their system which denies all access to the system unless your vehicle has been specifically authorized by a class and code ID.

Forgot to mention...the magnets you can buy to change the light....useless! If the inductance loop cannot detect a large mass of metal like a Harley...it sure as heck isn't going to see a hardware store magnet. Likely the loop is damaged.....move on!
