Noisy 103"
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:40:49 AM »

The motor in my '06 SEUC seems to be noisier than normal.  I've tried different synthetic fluids but it doesn't seem to make any difference.  Currently running Amsoil 20-50 in the crankcase and primary and Amsoil Severe Gear in the Tranny.  When I've talked to both Harley shops and independent shops I get the same story. "Some Harley's just make more noise that others".  They have listened to my bike and do not think anything is wrong.  But I don't like the noise.  Didn't have it in my '04 RKC.  Anybody have any suggestions on how I might quiet this beast down?

I have also posted here about getting some oil in the air filter.  Another issue that the shops claim is normal for a Harley.  I never have oil outside the air filter (Ness Big Sucker Stage 1) but when the bike heats up I can always smell it.  I run my oil level just above the add mark.  The only suggestion I have gotten on this issue to to run a drain tube down to the ground.  But that isn't solving the real problem.

There has to be a solution to my noise and oil issues.  Doesn't there????

How many miles? any internal engine mods, ie cams?
Is it noisier when hot?
Chain tensioners are the first thing that comes to mind.

15,800 miles
No internal mods
Yes, noiser when hot
Mostly sounds like top end noise

Where are the chain tensioners located?

I do have a automatic primary chain tension adjuster installed.

Jim is talking about the cam chain tensioners.  They go bad all of the time, and take out the oil pump as well.  Right side bottom of the engine...

If the cam chain tensioners were going bad and possibly effecting the oil pump could that be part of the reason for my oil blow by??

I doubt that they (oil pump/blowby) would be related

If the scavenge side of the pump is damaged or worn, it can affect the amount of oil carryover.  Excess oil left in the crankcase gets aerated by the action of the moving parts and can overwhelm the oil separators in the heads, leading to an increase in carryover to the air cleaner.  If I remember Dakota's earlier post on the issue, however, the carryover he's experiencing has been the same for a long time.

Dakota, my '05 103 has always been noisier than my TC88 Dyna.  I think you will find that the combination of the higher lift cams & valve springs, and the longer stroke, has a lot to do with the added noise.  The fairing and lowers don't help either, since they bounce that sound up to your ears.  If the noise hasn't changed since new, it's probably nothing to worry about.  If it has changed or gotten worse, then you need to have it checked out.  I would definitely start with the cam chain tensioners, since they are a known problem area on the '99 - '06 engines.  As they wear and little chunks come out, those chunks can restrict oil flow to things like lifters, cause the oil pressure bypass valve to stick, and mess up the oil pump.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I'll get the cam chain tensioners checked first thing in the spring.  Time to put the bike away for the winter.

No wis the time to bring it in.  YOu won't be riding it so you won't miss it if it's at the shop, and a lot of places hold special sales since their business is slowing due to the weather.

I have a question concerning the oil pump and cam chain shoes on my '05 SEEG.  Probably GRC will know best.
The bike has 22K miles on it and this winter I want to check on the shoes.  last spring I pulled the oil filter apart and there were the tiny, tiny flecks of the orange material in there.  Kinda normal I'm told for a years worth of riding (5,000mi).  I 'll check it again this winter.
I'd love to do the full-boat upgrade in there, 575's, Fueling and plate.  Funds are not going to allow that.  So at the minimum I want to replace the shoes and bypass spring.
Since the cam chain tensioner is under the cam plate, is it possible to pull the plate and the cams come out as a single unit?  Will the bearings be damaged and need replacement?  I think I have enough skill but not the necessary presses for the bearings and such.
My manual looks straight-forward enough, the whole unit looks like it would have to slide in there as one.

This a do-able job for the average garage guy and tools?
