These specially adapted homes make difference to these wounded warriors that I cannot put in words or explain. This is very rewarding and I would recommend participation to anyone who may be interested. A link to Sgt. Guerin's story at Homes For Our Troops can be viewed here http://www.homesforourtroops.org/site/PageServer?pagename=SGT_Jeffrey_Guerin

Some additional info on Sgt. Guerin:

Quote
Wounded Army medic, Jeffrey Guerin, given keys to new home in Marcellus
by Tom Leo / The Post-Standard
Saturday October 25, 2008, 1:20 PM

Wounded Army medic Sgt. Jeffrey Guerin was handed the keys to a new specially adapted home Saturday at 2752 Abounding Way in Marcellus.

The $200,000 home was built by Home for Our Troops. The charity builds and pays for the homes by soliciting corporations and the public for donations of construction services, goods and money.

More than 300 volunteers helped build the house from start to finish, including project coordinator Lisa Scalice and her husband Jack Scalice, of Pigliavento Builders. It usually takes four to six months for Homes for Our Troops to complete a specially adapted home.

"This is so amazing," Guerin said. "It's something I never believed would happen.

Guerin, 26, is a 2000 Marcellus High School graduate. He was two days short of his 22nd birthday in 2004 when, while conducting a security patrol in Afghanistan with the 25th Division's 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, his vehicle was ambushed and destroyed in a roadside bombing that killed two soldiers and injured three others. The impact of the explosion severely injured Guerin's legs, and shrapnel blinded him completely in his left eye and left minimal vision in his right eye.

The new house is filled with all kinds of amenities to make his life more comfortable.

The only steps are those leading to the basement. Guerin will be able to access the basement via an elevator. The house has automatic doors that open remotely.

The kitchen countertops are at a lower elevation, 32 inches off floor instead of the normal 34. There's a roll under kitchen sink and cook top, so Guerin is able to roll his chair under each.

The hallways are 42- to 44-inches wide; they're normally 36 inches. All the doors in the home are 36 inches wide. There's a whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The oversized shower is built so Guerin can roll his chair right in. There are motion-activated faucets and voice-activated heating and alarm systems.

Homes for Our Troops now has completed 33 homes throughout the United States and has another 18 projects in various stages of construction. Guerin's home is the second built in New York; the first was completed in July for Marine Lance Corporal Mark Beyer in East Aurora.

Your welcome, but it is important that I make it clear that this project was done by my very thoughtful wife, Raquel. These wounded warriors give soooo much it's the LEAST we can do. We would like to think "We Will Never Forget" but spending time with this young man is proof that there are some Americans that can't.

This is absolutely outstanding!! As a Marine Corps vet from Viet Nam, I only wish that all of the heroes in the military would get at least a "thank you" That's all that most of us ever wanted. Thank you so much for showing everyone that the people at home care. You all have made my day, and a lot of other people's day also. Again, thank you!!!

Howie,

I am a veteran originally from NY who worked on the 101st floor of 2 WTC back in the 80's.  Personally, I will never forget!  I am a PGR member and will be looking into doing volunteer work with this organization.  I never heard of it until I read this story, so by sharing this you are getting others involved and "paying it forward" so you BOTH deserve a lot of credit!

A well designed gift, great start.  I hope they don't stop there.  His wife and him have to live with those injuries for the rest of his life.  She is going to need a lot of support from community.

Thanks Howie.
