I believe there is a law that basically says if the modified part is not directly related to the failed part they can not refuse the claim. You would have to fight them but you have grounds. This started when the car mfg tried to make owners only buy certain types of oil or factory made parts. IE adding a sert has no effect on a bad grip heater, it could get a bit gray if you broke the rear pulley but I think you would still have a case. Your dealer is very important in these cases.

That would be correct - Magnusson Moss act <- See that link for all the sites that come back in a google search.

  • RUMSPRINGA!!!

I had an oil line replaced by a dealer in Illinois and they routed it incorrectly causing the motor to be starved for oil. I rode the bike like this to California and back to Ohio. Needless to say, the motor was ruined when I returned home and this became my local dealers problem. I had heads, gear drive cams, power commander, HC pistons, and a few other mods and they covered it. They asked me to bring in my stock parts, so when the warranty inspector came  out, the motor would look stock. It worked and the entire motor from the crank up was covered. The dealer is the difference between what gets covered and what doesn't IMHO.

Sounds like your dealer went the extra step only to cover their own ass. True test will be if you have a problem in the future.

Actually my local dealer wasn't covering their azz at all. They aren't the ones that installed the oil line incorrectly, it was a dealer in Illinois. This is one of a few cases where my dealer has gone the extra mile for me, but the people at the dealership that one day are taking care of you, can be gone tomorrow. Just thought I'd chime in with a good testimonial for a dealership for a change lol.

Before anyone hangs their hat on Magnusson-Moss, that covers manufacturer's warranties but I'm not so certain it applies to service contracts.  The topic of this thread is a service contract.  Check it out thoroughly before wasting a lot of money remains my advice.  As for depending on a dealer to basically cheat for you to get something covered, don't you feel just a little nervous about relying on someone else to commit fraud on your behalf?

When economic times get tough, warranty and service contract administrators alike tend to start squeezing the dealers, as in requiring prior approval for major repairs and in many cases requiring inspection by the administrator.  Not every service rep is an idiot who can be BS'ed, there are a few who know what they're doing.
