Saw a program on the Lincoln Highway last night on the hotel tube.  It's on one of those History/Nat Geo kinds of channels.  Have not ridden it but from the program, much of it is Route 66ish... hotels, diners, stations, etc.  I think I'd especially have an interest on the long US 30 section of it from NY to WY.

Through OH it would be a slo-go and you'd need very good directions. In most parts of the state it's been replaced by a freeway (USR 30). Lincoln Highway was a major road through the state many years ago and thus hit many county seats and evolved into main thorough fares with much of the charm going the way of McDonalds and such. There are lots of markers along some parts of the old road which remain. There is a "preservation" type society in OH which I believe is based out of Bucyrus, OH.

The US 30 part from Philadelphia to past Gettysburg is a challenging ride(slow). There have been many by passes put through and business US 30 still survives unlike RT 66, but the challenge has little with the ability to follow it. The amount of traffic lights and traffic at times would press your patience. The further west gets easier, but the quaint little towns have gotten littered with fast food chains. The mom and pop eateries have greatly fallen away and lodging has extremes. There are lots of interesting points of interest along RT30 but never considered staying on Old Lincoln Highway just for the fun of it. I have only ridden it from Phila to Carlisle (Rt 81), so what is beyond that I am not sure. I think the appeal of RT 66 is in part the challenge of finding it and staying on it since many places eliminated the designation.

A bunch of us went west from the Philly area in September & from Gettysburg past Bedford was a really nice ride. We jumped off it on the west side of Bedford to head north.

I can give you some thoughts on PA and NJ sections:

I ride it whenver I go to Pittsburgh.  The ride from Gettysburg is reasonably fast, without many lights and just a few quaint PA towns.  However, there are about 40 miles of mountains that have few passing areas and the trucks who are not in a rush and want to avoid the turnpike tolls will sometimes run 30 and you can add a good 45 minutes to the ride.  As a bonus, about half way between Gettyburg and Pittsburgh is the flight 93 memorial.  There's a sign right on 30 for it.

If you elect to ride 30 east of Gettysburg it's lots of lights and medium size towns like York and Lanacaster and the traffic is heavy.  Still some good diners and that type of place on it though.  Obviously the highlight of that stretch is the York HD plant.  Word of warning.  In Lancaster county the piles of mud in the right tire lane... It's not mud.

East of PA in Hell Jersey the road sucks.  It's all congested with tons of lights and fully commercialized with nothing but chain stores and restaurants.  Obviously there must still be a few old time eateries but finding them behind all the megamarts is almost impossible.  If you could see around the latest shopping center you probably still wouldn't be able to see over the lip of the pothole you just fell in.  I avoide the Garbage State at all costs, and if forced to drive through it to get to the ocean, well I just try to close my eyes.  LOL.

Oh, and before all you Jersey boys start yelling at me, I grew up in NJ, 200 yards off of Rt. 30 (The White Horse Pike) in South Jersey.  Camden County. So I'm allowed to pick on it.

Ride Safe,
J-Carr

Never been on the Lincoln Highway, but watched a great documentary on PBS about the road. Looked like there were some interesting sections to ride on. Really liked the Lincoln Motor Court west of Bedford, Pennsylvania,
