Ever been "flashed" by an unmarked?
« on: November 05, 2008, 05:51:03 PM »

While riding home from Maggie Valley this year, somewhere in Virginia, we had what appeared to be an unmarked car come up behind us. At first I thought I just saw reflections off the windshield. We think the unmarked was coming behind us and "shooting" our plates. It looked like they two people in the car were doing it to every vehicle they came up behind.

LEO's running our plates?

I thought you meant hit with the grill lights.  Was I surprised at about 140mph when I passed him in my SRT10 truck and he hit the lights.

Good news is he'd been pushing people out of the left lane for a few miles and when he got to me I pulled over and paced him not knowing he was some kind of law enforcement as he was in a Ford F250.

Since he played along until I stabbed it at about 110mph, I figured I was good.  Needed new drawers afterwards, but he didn't slow down much.  I got off at the next exit and frove the backroads home.

Dang that was a bad night.

This was a dash mounted device that I could see a very bright flash from. At first I thought it was just the sun reflecting off the windshield. But then I saw additional distinctive flashes as they pulled up behind vehicles and centered on the plates.

I'm guessing it is a laser - camera tied to a computer for look ups.

I've seen a similar device that can cruise parking lots and low speed checking, but this is the first I've seen something like this on the highway.

I figured you meant one of those, they use them a lot just north of me in BC.  Instant recognition for outstanding warrants and tickets.

I don't think it was Radar - we were obviously not speeding, and I could still see the flashes as he came up on cars at an off ramp.

I think "big brother" was running our plates at 65 mph.

The city of Portland, Oregon just started using it I think it was about 20 grand to do the car.

Me personally I think it is BS. Just more of BIG BROTHER and the spending that goes along with it. I know a bunch of crooks that will learn to hate it. But then again it is only going to get the small time criminal.

Be Safe
