head recall "to do or not to do"?
« on: November 18, 2008, 05:12:40 PM »

I'm taking my 08 SEUC in for it's 10k.  I have no leaking issues at all at this point.  The dealer, where I take all my bikes for service, says I should get the head recall done because sooner or later I will see a problem.  The bike runs great and strong, my delema is, should I fix it if it ain't broke or leave it alone???  I hate to crack the engine if I don't have to so I'm looking for some experienced advice!

you have 2 years from the date of the letter to get the "performance  enhancement" done. As long as there is no leaks and it is running good I would leave it alone. Besides if you wait awhile you will see if there is anymore "P Es" released and it will give the dealer more time to sharpen their skills.

My motto - 'If it ain't broke, don't break it!'  Leave it alone and see what develops.  Like was said, you've got two years.

Now those are wise words right.  Thanks, Jerry!

Great speakin' with ya earlier.  Let me know if you decide to get your headers coated and how you like 'em.  You'll likely have your's done and reinstalled before I get my machine home.   :huepfenlol2:

Some value to the old "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it", but.......

but do you really think the MoCo would put out the $$$$ if they had not identified a real cause for concern that is going to cause them to perhaps spend much more $$$$ if they have to replace motors because of an inherent problem that could be headed off before motor failures occur?

I'm not a proponent of cracking open a motor that has no apparent problems, but like I said above....

I called the dealer a couple of weeks ago so they could get the parts ordered.  I am, hopefully, going to have mine done this winter.  I say "hopefully" because from what I understand the kit/parts are on back order.

Anyway if figure by the time I get mine in, they will have done enough to know what they are doing (as best as can be expected anyway).

You certainly could be correct.  Doing the repair will not address any potential issues with the crank but I guess would give and opportunity to check the runout.  Failure I did experience was caused by 'dropped' valve guide which in the new heads have a retainer that has been the subject of much speculation as to whether it will work to prevent such a problem.  But in any case I would expect the oil leak to develop first and that is what I based my reply on so hopefully nothing of any magnitude to fear if one held off for a while.

They don't remove the cam chest or primary to do the enhancement program. You're further along than doing it from scratch, but there's extra work involved for them. You'll still be paying to have that done, unless of course you're out of tolerance. But at 0.012" runout tolerance, good chance you'll be within tolerance. And that you'll be paying. Just making sure everyone knows checking runout's on your own dime. But I wouldn't think twice about having it checked either, whether I have to pay or not! ;)

Well if you decide to do it, make they have the right heads. I was told that mine were in several months ago and scheduled work for next week. Dropped it off yesterday and my tech looked at the engine color and said wait a minute. Then we opened the box and saw that the head fins were painted black for the 07 and mine is 08. So its gonna take a little while longer now :(     Make sure you got the right parts!

This happened to me and part of the recall is to check the barrells and mine needed new ones these are also on back order it is still at the Dealers 5 weeks later they do not ring me to keep me updated as they say they will and i find the treatment un acceptable i would get rid of the bike but no one will give a decent price at the moment.

John,
I know this really sucks.  All of it.  Paying the outrageous price for retrotech in the first place is enough to make one wretch.  Then to have to put up with crappy warranty service only makes it worse.
Topping it all off, even if the MOCO does get your parts to your dealer, and your dealer does the warranty work, are you ever going to be fully confident in the machine to the point that you would hop on it and ride anywhere in the world?  If the answer is yes.  Great!  May many Blessings be upon you in your journeys.  But if the answer is no, then the way I see it is you have two choices:  1)  get it fixed under warranty and sell it this spring or 2)  table up yet again, find a good, knowledgeable engine builder........even if it means removing the engine, crating it and sending it outside your homeland for work, and have it built the way it should have been built  to begin with.  Even some of us '06 guys have done this.........mainly because we just want more grunt than the 103cid motor can muster.......simply for more power and even better reliability.

Whatever you decide, I certainly wish you the best.

Just picked up my Jester today after having the 0905 Product Enhancement done.  Only think I noticed is that it starts easier now with the new ACRs.  Perhaps one of mine (or both) wans't working.  :nixweiss:  Other than that, no noticeable difference in performance.  We'll see how the enhancement holds up.

You got that right Henry.  ;)  It was a chilly ride home, ambient air temp was 40 degrees...but I put the full face on, cranked up the heated grips and the heated seat and had a very pleasant 45 mile ride from the dealership to the house.  I love that bike!!  I'm planning on keeping this one for along time.   :2vrolijk_21:
