The only issue with variable speed units is when the warranty runs out and that motor or controller board goes, it's pricey.

But i thought nothin' can stop a train!!!! :huepfenlol2:

Nothing can stop a train, but a Trane can be stopped by a thermostat.

I still haven't decided which unit to go with. It was only down to 28 last night. still have the other two units working so I'm not worried.

O.k., it has been a week tomorrow since I first left a message at their customer service requesting information, four days since the second message I sent them, and still NO CONTACT! Regardless of the quality, or lack of quality of their components, they have NO customer service...they couldn't care LESS! So, in following the fashion created by our wonderful Hoist, I say FTG! Don't buy their crap!

Been in the HVAC industry my entire life. Commercial and industrial. Residential's fairly simple stuff. Like anything else in this world, you get what you pay for. Buy a Trane, Carrier or York from a REAL distributor/dealer of these brands, and you can't go wrong. Don't buy them from the Home Depots of the world though. They're not the same units. And builder series units, like the other brands you've all mentioned here, are junk! ;)

You can get customer from India where they speak and understand the English language fluently.
I'll say this again. That equipment is cheaply made, uses the same compressor Carriers do. There are Goodman/Janitrol/other names also  out there that have been running as long as some of the others. A lot of the problems come from the installation of the equipment, and also the service if not done correctly. I'm not sticking up for that company but it's not entirely their fault for equipment failures, good customer service is just hard to find now a days. That is why sometimes it's better to pay a little more for something from someone that will back their product.
For instance Georges tools, I dealt with the man once and know that he backs his products and that he is an alright fella and help you if you need it.

Amen to that! My dad is an HVAC guy...when we replaced my York unit (that was 24 years old) in my last house, we put in a good comparable name-brand unit (Rheem) from his supplier...exactly what I'll do when this builder-installed crappolla takes the big dump. for the time being, I will keep it going till I can't take it no more! My biggest gripe is still their lack of concern when a customer tries to reach them...no customer service! All of the abovementioned units are great name brands as well...

The Home Depot thing is true as well, they get factory seconds (didn't quite pass the 100% factory approval)...same applies in the auto parts industry. If you buy from a good parts store, like NAPA or Carquest, you get good parts. You buy from Trak Auto or Auto Zone, you get factory seconds as well. You definitely get what you pay for! Would you shop for a bargain heart surgeon?

Thanks for all the replies folks...its always good to get everyones feedback!  :2vrolijk_21:

They're not seconds, they're built to Home Dpeot's specs, not necessarily the mfr's better standard offering. The higher SEER does not mean you're getting a better unit either. Just more efficient (usually accomplished with larger condenser coils for more heat transfer surface). ;)

I don't know, Howie...  I know you're career is the HVAC world, but I have Lennox HVAC in my home and shop, and had Lennox in my last home and shop - combined over 25 years.  I do the basic service myself - and I have never had a need for a  single service call for any reason.  Lennox may not be top shelf, but my experience would place it far from being junk...    ???

Standard Lennox units are not necessarily builder series quality units Scott. Lennox makes a decent unit too. I'm a Lennox distributor. But none compare to Trane, Carrier or York's best offerings. ;)
