I've seen lots of riding dogs and always wondered how they like hanging out behind a harley exhaust all day.

Pado,
We traveled a bunch with our Dachshund.  I pull a trailer and had her "port-a-pet" tied on top of the trailer.  She sort of enjoyed the first trailer we had, but it had a spring suspension.  She'd go and was ready to go at a moments notice, but you could tell she was going because she didn't want to be left, not because she REALLY liked it.  I first started with her "house" tied onto the rear seat of the jap bike I rode years ago.  She did fine with that.

She then started having back problems (unrelated to the riding), so we upgraded to an air ride suspension trailer.  She LOVED it!!!!!!  When ever she even thought the trailer was coming out, she was standing at the back waiting to go.  When it was hot, we'd wrap freezer packs in towels (which later were upgraded to a "wife-made" ice pack bag, that held several in specific positions) and when it was cold, we had a large denim bag that we'd put her house in.  We'd let her stay out when it was hot until the last moment to help cool her.  She didn't like being the last loaded AT ALL!

I did keep my exhaust stock on the ultras to protect her hearing, but even when I was pulling her trailer with the wide glide (rather loud exhaust- it's my bar hopper), she never seemed to hold back when put in her house.  Since we've now got 3 pooches, we must board them or go in the bus.

Go for it, your pooch will love it!  Start with short rides that end up someplace fun, ice cream or the park.  Then move to longer rides as they get used to it.  Gabbie ended up going for as long as any day trip we wanted to take, up to about 750 miles one way.  We never went further, trying to minimize her back stresses, but I think she would have gone to Alaska with us if she could have.

I just picked her up.  She's a little shy but what the hell, hanging around us will get rid of that.  Phyllis is in heaven.

Don't remember for sure who.  Think it was Mobe right here in my town but would not swear to it.  Someone, however, for a small dog mounted a nicely padded out doggie carrier to a normal detachable rock.  Certainly looked like an elegantly simple solution that also kept the pooch above the worst of the exhaust sound and gasses.

My Black Lab is just too big. I'd need a sidecar.

Shouldn't this thread be in CVO pets?

Your lab needs a WAGs pet trailer (wagstrailers.com), not the sidecar.  The trailer will ride MUCH better than the sidecar- I looked at and drove those for my Dashchund before I bought the trailer.  I was not impressed, and I originally had really wanted one- that old nostalgic look would have been cool, but it wasn't worth the drastic change in the ride.  With the trailer, you can use it only when needed, while the hack takes much more work to take off and put back on.

Three stories on this subject

1) Used to be a guy with a dalmation that rode around San Diego with the dog in a saddlebag. The dog looked terrified to me but he hopped into the saddlebag without being told to. Sounds like it'd be way too small, but the dog seemed fine. He/She ? wasn't that big. Anyway, I was told that somebody turned the guy into the ASPCA and I didn't see the guy with the dog after that. I can only imagine the trouble the poor guy probably got himself into.

2) A good friend of mine had a small dog (can't remember what breed, shcnoodle or something or other) Anyway, my buddy's wife rode her own Road King and she'd put the dog in a milk crate that was secured to the luggage rack with some stout hardware. The milkcrate had a piece of carpet on the bottom and there'd be times the little pooch would curl up and snooze while we were riding. The dog would whine and whine every time he heard a H-D pull in the yard as he wanted to go. Never saw the dog act anything buy happy and excited about riding. AND it wasn't about being left behind because if my friends went outd for the evening and didn't start their bikes, the dog would curl up and go to sleep on his bed happy and content to have the place to himself for awhile.

3) And then there was Marla and Scooter. Marla was a smokin hot Canadian chick with an attitude a mile wide that rode around the USA on a Harley covering events for (chit, can't remember which Biker mag she worked for) I don't know how many of you remember Rip from EasyRider but she wasa female Rip (ok , a hell of a lot better looking) Anyway, she had this Border Collie named Scooter that sat behind her on a sheepskin and rode with her everywhere in every kind of weather. If you've ever seen a sled dog before a race, you have a mental picture of Scooter when it was time to go. Now some folks liked Marla, some folks loved her and some - - - - well lets's just say she had a few detractors. Me ? I was one of those who loved her. She was a woman on a Harley back before it became common place and she could ride as good as any man and better than many. She was gorgeous and she knew it and she had that Canadian sense of humor that either you get or your don't. Anyway, she died in a bike crash and her loss is still felt by many. It seems since she and Rip passed on to ride with the Great Biker in the Sky nobody has taken their place.
