SE Stage I Air Cleaner Kit
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:40:25 AM »

I purchased V&H Monster Ovals, SERT and SE Stage I Air Cleaner Kit for my new FLHTCUSE4.  :) Was told that I also had to buy P/N 29121-07, new Air Cleaner Cover because the 2008 and 2009 covers that came with the bikes will not work with the conversion.  ???  I went out and looked at the new cover, P/N 29121-07, and I feel it will seriously really detract from the looks.  :-\  It is the old, familiar "football" shaped cover I have on my '03 Fatboy and '05 Road King.  It comes with a black ring that sticks on the outside that says Screamin Eagle in orange, but no mention of the 110 motor or as I have stated, no where near the quality and appearance of the original.  I am told there is no way to retrofit the existing cover with the new Stage I kit.  I know a lot of you out there have already done similar upgrades on both '08 and '09 models.  Any help here?  I really do not want P/N 29121-07 stuck on the new CVO.  >:(

Thanks in advance!

I have 08 SEUC with the stage 1 - they did not change my air cleaner, I'm still using the one that came with the bike.

Interesting, Wenchal.  Mancuso, here in Houston, says you have to change.  The info attached to the Stage I A/C in the catalog also refers to having to switch.  I was told the same held true for "08s, too.

Not much benefeit leaving cat in the headpipe adding free flowing exhaust and hi-flow air cleaner with the SERT. It will help, But not much bang for the buck. The cat really restricts exhaust flow. May want to consider either removing cat, Which there is a link here regarding that process, Or look at Vance&Hines new set-up. Click on link below.

I believe they started that air cleaner cover change requirement all the way back in 2006.  The CVO covers changed from a round center section that mated up with the round SE filter, to a more oval/rectangular center section that only contacts the filter over a small area at the top and bottom.  The lack of support can lead to the cover moving and even to eventually breaking out the weld nut in the center of the filter.  However, plenty of folks with '06 and later models have the round SE or K&N filter with the stock cover even though the MoCo says it won't work.

Take the filter and fit it into the cover (off the bike) so you can see how it contacts the cover.  For the best reliablity and security you need to add something to the cover that will contact the filter in the front and rear areas where it doesn't currently touch.  Full contact all around isn't necessary, but more contact will be more stable and reliable.

From what you said, if I am reading it correctly, maybe a few small pieces of rubber, adhesive backed weatherstrip strategically attached to the back of the cover would do the trick to stabilize it on the sides also.  Am I hearing you correctly?

Yes, but it has to be rigid enough to provide solid support.  Weatherstrip material would be too soft to provide any real support, a hard rubber would be better.

I was actually thinking of the same thing...just trying to think of what would be a harder rubber with adhesive backing that you could cut an inch or 2 off and stick it on the back of the cover.  I'll have to see how thick it needs to be also before trying anything.  I'm sure something common and easily located will serve the purpose well.  I won't be playing with that item for another week or 2.  Right now, I'm headed back to the garage to work on getting my mufflers ready to go for when my Fullsac's arrive next week.

Jerry,

You are correct (You Usually Are).... When i installed Zippers high flow air cleaner, Because of the deeper filter Zippers provides a metal spacer to install using the stock air cleaner screw to snug the OEM cover securely.

So, MrD, you are saying that the MaxFlow part number 117-448C is a direct bolt on with no fabrication necessary and the stock '09 air cleaner cover will fit on properly with no problem?  That's the chrome backing plate on that one also...correct?

That is correct, The "C" after the part # indicates Chrome backing plate. Direct bolt on installation.  :2vrolijk_21:
