45 Amp Charging System?

I've got a question for one of you most enlightened poobahs, is the high output 45 amp stator (29999-97B) OEM on the 05 SEEG?
Last night while riding in 29 degrees, I had heated gloves, heated jacket, heated grips, heated seat, motolites, spots, and HW amp all cranked up and began to wonder if I might need some additional charging capability. :nixweiss:

At 45 amps you should have a nominal 540 watts of available capacity to run all your goodies, roughly.

You should be able to find out how many watts each device requires...

45 generator amps x 12 system volts = 540 watts

I have an aquaintance that has a penchance for goodies on his road glide and had a 3 phase alternator installed on his bike for air compressors, lights, heaters and I think an ice maker too...

No Mark, ours do not have the 45A stator.  I believe this has been asked before and 2lane has the extras you are talking about with no problems.   Bob  (I've got everything you mentioned less the heated clothes)..

Bob's spot on MJ.  The SEEG's are 38 amp.  As they'd been for several years before.  If the primary is ever off you could put a 45 amp upgrade on.  Easy enough chore if you're in there.  Even though I've thought about it several times I've not done it though.

As Bob mentioned I've ridden all day with the seat on, heated jacket liner and gloves and used the radio with the HW amplifier.  When the stock headlghts were installed running the spots at the same time seemed to max out the system.  I'd notice a little needle dance.  Installing the HID lights regained a small margin of error though.

Some had questioned before whether "stock" 05 bikes were 38 amp system and CVO bikes got better.  They did not.  Easy enough to check in the parts manual.  Or; here's the SEEG.

Just thought of something else MJ.  If you're considing a charging system upgrade let me know.  There's a company here in Joplin that is the OE manufacturer for a lot of the aftermarket.  They make nice parts too.  Can pick up a rotor and stator together for $150 if I remember right.  Rotor by itself I think was about $80. 

As many times as I've been in there for some reason don't know why I never popped the rotor off and changed it?  Just hasn't been necessary.  If/When it ever fails on either bike they'll get upgraded then.

Was thinking about exactly that as was writing a moment ago.  And I don't remember whether the change happened with the 06s or 07s.  For those of us with the 38 amp systems the up to 45 is easy should the need arise.  And that's going to be plenty for 99.9% of us.  After all, how many actually strongly push the limit on the 38 amp units...

Prolly changed with all the other stuff they changed down there on the '07 FLH/FHT's, that became HD's proprietary new design. ;)

According to Harley's "never wrong" shop manual, the '05 FLHTCI, FLHTCUI, and the FLTRI were the only models to get the 45 amp rotor, all the rest of the Touring line got the 38 amp.  The part about that that has always confused me is why the FLHTCSE, which is based on the FLHTC but has the injection like a CI, didn't get the 45 amp rotor. 

Oh well, as Don stated it's an easy upgrade if anyone really needs the extra output.  Just be careful installing the high output rotor, since the magnets are stronger and could get your fingers pinched (or worse) between the rim and the crankcase.

They certainly will pinch hard if you give them the chance.  I cheat and use the little puller tool as a slow release.  Got bit once and it won't happen again.

I talked to Cycle Electric and he said th 45 Amp Rotor is expensive. I think he said around $200.00.

I'm pretty sure the change to the 50 was in 06...my SEUC had that, if memory serves me.
