Sharing ride plans
« on: December 16, 2008, 12:45:56 AM »

Does anyone know of a program I can use to plan rides & have them available to others to view & print off? I've tried the HD ride planner, mapquest & Microsoft streets & trips, but none of them has that functionality.

TIA

I believe the HD ride planner allows that funtion if you make the ride public as opposed to private.  It gives you the option when you save the plan....

Yes the H-D ride planner has that option, and it works quite well. However printing is a mess on that. The other ride planners create files which can be exchanged, e.g. by email, however anyone needs to have the software to be able to display with full functionality. Another option would be use a tour planner to create Google Earth compatible files (most can do this now). These files can be used by anyone using Google Earth (which is free). Problem with this is that GE does not display exact street routing between way points, but rather a straight line, so you need to place the way points very close to each other. That in turn may disturb some of the GPS units, which typically have limitations as to the number of way points per route. I guess that sums it up so far ...

I thought of using the HD ride planner, but these are routes I've planned for our local HOG chapter - not much use to anybody else.

I think it will not be an issue. If you "publish" on the H-D ride planner, it is not like broadcasting to the world. You can give the tours very specific names and share the links to call them only within your group. I think it is very manageable.

That would be the simplest solution, it also has the GPS synchronisation - easily transfers f/ mapsource, I'll give it a shot.
