Another Cam Choice Question For The Hell Riding Gurus!
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:03:08 PM »

OK, so I'm building another 110 now, right! It's becoming an annual ritual, and I'm not thrilled with that. My last attempt was to make it bulletproof. It wasn't. This time I'm using an off the shelf S&S gear drive cam. I was planning to use the S&S 625G this time. Today we discussed my "mellow" riding style and Vern asked me what I thought about using the S&S 585G and detuning this beast a lil. I immediately told him No Way! There's a CR 595G in there now. But I've been thinking about it. A lower lift, less aggressive cam will definitely be easier on the entire valve train.

If ya don't know, it's 110", Cyclerama worked and ported SE110 heads decked for 9.8:1 w/Cometic 0.030's, Axtell barrels and CP Forged Pistons, S&S 4-3/8' Forged Crank and Timken bearing conversion, 62mm HPI TB and D&D FatCat w/quiet Performance Muffler. So my questions to the real guru's here with S&S cam experience, and hopefully on a 110 are......

How much difference will I see between the two S&S cams? How much am I giving up compared to the CR 595? Can I be happy with it, knowing I left__HP & TQ on the table? Not specs, I have them. Real world, seat of the pants comparisons! Being it's my 3rd motor in 3 years, I wanna make sure I get this right! Vern's OK with the 625, and power wise, it matches up nicely w/the engine design I have. He also knows I'm very hard on it and just wanted to throw it out there. The top end will last longer with it for sure. My RevTech 110 Evo only has an Andrews EV72 w/560 lift in it. I haven't finished building that one either, so I haven't checked it out yet. I know higher output engines will never last like Stage I engines. But those are my 2 cam choices and I didn't want to start a discussion on cam selection for 110's, just try to compare these 3 cams. So......

Will the S&S 585G do the job for me? Wadda ya'll think? :confused5:

Thanks for your opinions gang! :2vrolijk_21:

so I'm guessing you want to push the powerband to the right?...will the heads be modified to complement these new cams?...I'd think the 585 is better choice than 625 for a 110, unless you bump compression way up...aren't you the guy who rides a lot in nyc?...If so, I'd want moderate compression...just know that either of these cams will come on at later rpm than the cr595, the 625 much more so...whatever you do, buddy, here's hoping you get 50k trouble-free miles!!!!

Thanks man! :2vrolijk_21:

We discussed the heads. He wanted to leave CR under 10:1 so he wasn't touching the cc's. We're running CP Flatops and use .030 Cometics. Vern hasn't checked them. We're going by what Wes said he set the CR up for. The S&S cams will come on later than the CR 595 for sure; the 585 not as bad as the 625. Wes set his cams up that way. The motor ran great, but it was also a tough cam on the valvetrain due to it's timing. I don't mind dumping it at higher RPM's to get to the PB. But that's also what Vern is concerned with, in thinking about detuning it so it lasts longer.

Hmmm..... damn decisions!

NO is the answer to your question.

A 625 done right will be fine.
Anything less and you will whine and bitch because you gave up some.
You may not like the answer, but you asked and I know how you are.
Nothing wrong with a 625 done right.

Probably the wrong answer for you but 10.5.

Get Vern to call TR (Tmanperformance).

Per Tman, his 625 in a 10.5 motor produces more torque that his 590.

Torque is my goal!

Damn, I knew you were gonna say that. Another reason Vern suggested the 585. City bikes like a lil lower CR. Get stuck in bad traffic and they get hotter. He'd up it to at least 10:1 with the 625. He said the 585 will do OK at 9.8:1. But I won't get the most out of the motor either. But it'll last longer. Crap!!! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Howie I don't want to throw any chit into the game BUT I would also look at Zippers Red Shift TC657. A lot of lift for a big inch motor but lower duration. More TQ, easy on the valve train and comes in early. I have been running that grind for a couple of years. I have to say it is quite and makes power.

Howie, I couldn't agree with Chip more.  It will drive you nuts knowing you left torque you could've really felt on the table rather than in the bike.

As for the thought of "city bikes like a lil lower CR" suggested above you're not considering something important.  Cybil is (or will be) your touring bike.  You've got a stable of city bikes to choose from.  Cybil may be a blast to ride but, even with the lower CR and smaller cam you're considering, it's still not the quickest most nimble city traffic managing bike in the garage.  Joy would be a better city ride as would the other current "project."

Seriously, just because Cybil might not be the best traffic skipper in the garage doesn't mean she's a grandmatronly ride with a detachable fairing sitting in the corner to keep your hair nice when riding to church on the high holy days.  You've got the benefit of having nearly purpose built rides right now.  An outstanding, stable, comfortable, well appointed, powerful highway touring machine and at least a couple of bad ass city bikes made for evading the traffic and potholes and for getting around them in a hurry.
