When Terrie bought her 09 Street Glide they told us that the factory warranty, for a short period of time, is 2 1/2 years.

I got to thinking about it yesterday, while at work.  Sent her an email saying that we need to dig out the paperwork to confirm that in writing.  We'll be doing that today and report back here. :nixweiss:

There were some (then) recent buyers reporting a few months back that their warranty was extended "automatically" by HD because of the time of year they made the purchase.  Some kind of winter purchase warranty extension because the bikes weren't ridden much in the winter after their purchase.

If I remember correctly no one ever got any documentation from the dealers making this promise.  At the time I looked and found absolutely nothing about it on the HD website nor in any other posted literature or documents.

The lack of documentation always made me wonder whether the program was real or a slightly pie in the sky promise from dealers that wouldn't be any good beyond the purchasing dealership (if even there when it really mattered).  If someone actually has something documented it would be interesting to see it posted.

Well, Terrie and I went for a ride today.  I confirmed at three different dealerships that it's true.

Something the MoCo is doing and it's not permanent and nothing in writing......no flyers, advertisement, nothing.  When we got to our dealership I asked the sales Mgr. about it.  He pulled up the VIN number of the SG that was bought last month.  It has a factory warranty until 4/1/11.

I did ask if it applied to all dealerships nationwide or just the dealerships in Nor Cal or all of Calif. (like the auto mfr. do at times).  He told me that it's nationwide and that all dealerships were notified at the same time.

I don't doubt you at all JC, but I fail to see the point if they don't publicize it.  Sort of like GM changing to a 5 year powertrain warranty to improve sales, but then keeping it a secret from the general public.  Or Ford offering employee pricing, but only the sales people know about it.  Neither would tend to increase traffic or draw in folks who weren't already planning to buy anyway.

My guess is that H-D hasn't had to do any real marketing in such a long time that they just flat don't remember how it's done.

Odd program or incentive, that's for sure.  Also, if only the standard two year warranty is all that's ever documented at purchase and a buyer is given absolutely nothing to verify a longer warranty term he or she has never received any instrument contractually obligating to the longer warranty.  If that's all so what's to keep the company from later saying "what warranty, we never contracted with you for a longer warranty?".  Not suggesting that such an incident is likely.  Just can't see any logic to giving any benefit to a consumer that you tell them nothing about.  I'd also never be absolutely comfortable trusting a warranty extension they wouldn't document for me.

Since none of this is written down I wonder how it affects the extended warranties many of us buy? Does it mean they should get a reduced price since the MOCO is picking up the tab for 6 months? Or would a seven year warranty go for 7 1/2 years now?

Seven years isn't seven years beyond the original warranty to begin with.  So the "seven year extended" is really just five extra years.  The sophistry they use to rationalize the distinction is that the service contract offers services the warranty does not.  So you're getting seven years of "benefit."  That being so to begin with; no extra six months.

I don't have any answers.....you'll have to get them from your local dealership.

When I asked about something in writing, he reminded me "J.C. how many bikes have you bought from us.....we've never given you anything in writing regarding the factory warranty.  But any dealership can punch in your VIN and see the factory warranty expiration date just the same as I just did for you".

I've been doing business at the same dealership for more than 25 years, so I don't have any reason to doubt him, at this point.

Actually we all get something in writing detailing the factory warranty when we buy a new bike.  It's in the owner's manual.  It's also publicly available information.  That's the odd part about this extension of the factory warranty that you've been told of on Terri's bike and that others have mentioned a few times in the last several months.  It's not documented anywhere.  At least not anywhere that the bike's owner can apparently find.  It's just so damned unusual.  And where corporate obligations are concerned undocumented and unusal make me worry.

I suppose that if you have the extended warranty, that just plain wouldn't matter anyway.  I have never used the extended warranty, but isn't there a small deductible amount that we pay?  If that's the case, then it would matter during those extra 6 months to avoid the deductible portion.

Yes there is a (normally) $50 deductible. You only pay that deductible for one time per part replaced under that warranty. Example your starter goes bad you pay $50 to have it replaced if it goes bad again you don't have to pay the deductible over again.

So I guess I may have an extra 6 month window to avoid a $50 deductible.  Now I see why they don't advertise this.  It doesn't amount to much.  Surely, the dealers wouln't want to make this information readily available when they are trying to sell you an extended warranty.  I'm surprised that they don't just build it into the price of the bike and go the route that BMW cars have...4 years warranty with maintenance included.  Then they could start a certified used bike program to help them sell used bikes too.
