For a guy that is worried about harley support abroad, I do not think going gear drives with his concerns is a wise move.  Stay within the Harley scope of what they can support easily and know and ride on from there.

I would like I said above convert to the 07 style of cam chest and supporting hardware and with that you should have no issues.

Better oil pump too!

No chit, he called factory while I was sitting there ,and told me the factory is working on a conversion kit, nothing available as of yet!

Conversion kit is from andrews, Cam choices are a bit limited when you do this.

Here are the conversion instructions with a listing of parts needed.

If you want the hands-down best service, support, and price on the conversion then contact John (HerkoBagger) here:

http://www.flyingwperformance.com/

His kits will be all-inclusive which you may/may not get with others.  All parts will be H-D where offered, and he makes sure you have a lot of the small stuff for a turn key job.

First, if you getting 35K miles on the twin cam tensioners I would consider you lucky.

I would have changed to gear driven cams with the mileage you are putting on, and any good dealer should be able to handle any repair with regards to them.

The biggest issue I see you may have in leaving the original tensioners in, is they had a tendency to come apart and ruin oil pump and then destroy other engine parts.

Which is very hard to get fixed quickly on the road.

I agree, you've been a lucky man!

If you want reliability, I'd suggest plug n play gear drive cams (such as the Freedom cams) that don't require additional head work, etc.   Along with those cams, I'd suggest the Fueling Rivera oil pump.

That's where I went and I haven't looked back..........

Im new at this site and was directed here about (cam chain tenioners)..I have a 2006 Ultra Classic .  i changed my tensioners at 51,000 miles. After inspecting my tensioners after the shop changed them (keep all parts) my wear and tear and major pitting was getting low , maybe 1,000 miles more and I would have had major problems.  I changed to AMSOIL around 40,000 miles thinking it would help reduce my wear, the jury is still out on Amsoil but I am going to continue to use it until my next tensioner change and compare my parts from using Screaming Eagle Synthetic to Amsoil Synthetic. I thought about going gear on gear because of the miles I continue to put on her but I'm not wild about the "spinning" sound even though I know thats the best way to go.  Why Harley doesn't mention the upcoming problems is beyond me.  If a ringing sound occurs in your motor your tensioners are ready to pop....Now I'm looking at fuel pump problems among other nagging injuries on her.....My total bill for new tensioners, bearings adjustable push rods gaskets O -rings came to $585 labor included....
Rick, one 'variable' that you're going to have in trying to compare the tensioner wear between the amsoil and HD syn3 is that your chain has worn smoother and will probably not wear the tensioner shoes as much in any oil. Some believe this to be the big difference in why some get premature wear of the tensioners.....sharp chain edges vs. other chains that are smoother.  Some of the chains will practically cut your finger they are so 'sharp'.  This is why I'm keeping my chain when I do finally change the tensioners.....2nd set should last forever.  ::) har!  (JMHO)  spyder

They took my 07 seuc motor apart with 25,000 miles on and left original tensioners in and said they looked like new. The motorman also said with new runout problems or expanded tolerances on the crankshafts, gear driven cams aren't as much of a option.I would try the new style tentioners. Godd luck JDO

Was on the phone recently with a well known owner of a performance center that offers cams to complete engine packages.  Has his own line of optional to ultra performance cams.  Stated, with the given shortcomings of our late model crankshafts, he had been using the new style chains and tensioners with great success.  Even on the higher lift camshafts.  His final comments were that he couldn't sell a gear drive setup except for the race only engines.

Not knocking those that have had good results with gear drives, but unless one wants to drop a grand to fix the late model crank then the conversion to new style setup is proving itself highly viable.

Just MHO..........

What HD wanted to charge for doing the tensioners is what got me started with doing the work myself, then to changing cams, and the rest of the parts in the bottom end.

of course you could just use the new upgrade kit - then its fully supportable by hd dealers.
