The irony of it all - cat removal
« on: January 17, 2009, 06:01:06 PM »

As I had mentioned in one of my posts, I had asked my HD dealer to remove my cat when they were doing my other mods.  A number of you were surprised that they would agree to do that.  No worries I thought.  They said yes and they know what they are doing.  When I went to pick up my new SERG I double checked with the gent who was  doing my work and he again assured that he had removed it.  He also installed 2.25 Fullsacs.  Being the man from Missouri (show me state) I quizzed him a bit more about what he removed.  He said he got about an inch of material and no, he did not use a core bit.  Something didn't smell right.  Well, being a optimist I was still hopeful that he removed the cat.  However being a realist I decided to order the core bit from McGill, just in case.  Today, I pulled the right muffler and guess what.  Yep, cat still there.  A couple runs to Home Depot to get a rod and some bolts and I started drilling.  Well, I only have a 14.4V battery powered drill.  It took forever because the battery would die poretty quickly and had to wait for it to be recharged.  I followed the instructions that many of you were good enough to write in the forum.  Finally, I broke thru, but cat did not come out.  So, I started her up, rev'd a bit and it came shooting out literally with a bit of flame, ala Batmobile.  It is now out and measures 5" long.

I am quite disappointed in my dealer,  Would rather they said no, then tell me they did when they didn't.  Thanks to all of you for paving the way.  Ted

tri  Did you have any increase in sound level with the cats out and the baffles in? I still have my cats in the headers and with the 2 1/4" FullSac Baffles they are quiet on my bike. But I do not want them to loud. Thanks Doc

tlr, have you been back to the dealer to discuss the "miscommunication" you had?

I have not been back to the dealer yet, thats coming this week

HDDOCFL - I didnt put the muffler back on yet.  I will do that tomorrow and check the sound with the sound meter.  I'll post that tomorrow.  However, I too have the 2.25 baffles and I would not call them quiet by any means.  They are close to loudness as Rineharts but with a deeper rumble.

Doc, I just cored out my CAT and YES :2vrolijk_21: it is louder but not obnoxiously so...it's much deeper than just with the fullsacs (mine are 2").  Its not loud enough to attract Johny Law or have mothers running to drag their children inside, but it allows you to putt down the road with a little more authority!

It's great that a dealer can be talked into removing a federally mandated pollution device. The fines are astronomical. Lot's of free flowing information here is all i can say. I predict big money for factory cat headers on ebay to come in the future ???!

Does anybody know the dealer-price for the stock one ?
or a h-d-number ?
I would buy a cat-free-header from a standard one and keep my stock one original.
Does anybody know the price of the standard-stock-header ?

I think I will wait for Full Sac to come out with his headers and save my stockers just incase I may need them in the future, No inspection here in FL. but there has been talk of them bringing it back. I,ll play it safe.  Doc

Tis is also my way , to keep the stock header in save .
I will try to get a header from a standard tourer of the 2009ers , a used one should be not a great problem and should be cheaper than to buy a SE-header with cat , i guess .
And it will fit , when i interprete the facts here on the board in the right way .
Does anybody has a hd-number or a price for such a 09er-standard-tourer-header ?

There are going to be tons of 09 street glides and ultras going with aftermarket headers. I'm guessing $100 bargains or less on ebay or at local dealers. Vance and Hines will have an x pipe 2 into 1 into 2 comming soon and I'm sure others. I'm holding on to my stock cat in case. I don't like the left over obstructive cat material a core drill misses besides. Not as good as just finding a catless header. Amen :drink:

A dealer would have to be a complete idiot to remove a cat from a head pipe.  As you stated in another post, there are bound to be a lot of stock headpipes on Ebay soon without the cat's..

EBay.... or take-off parts at the local dealership. Sometimes, if you have the right relationship with someone in the delaership's parts or service department, you can get a "brother-in-law" free deal for take-off parts not collected by the original owner... such as a set of '09 non-CVO stock head pipes...

If I remember correctly, the header is about $460.  Not much different than the V$H X pipe.  And Highwaystar there is not enough cat material left to worry about!

From what I have seen, There is significant material left. The flow most certainly is affected by the ridge of material remaining. If I'm wrong then perhaps a dyno run comparison with a non cat pipe would be in order for the definitive answer. Just Thinkin out loud... :nixweiss:

My dealer said I could have the header off a bike that they were installing a big bore kit on. Works for me...
