I hope starting the boy at 5 will make him a better rider. Makes the wife nervous though...
I think early skill in the dirt translates to better skill on the road, however I find that starting on dirt late in life the road experiance counts for squat! I don't trust that little skinny front tire. (I bought a dirtbike to ride with the boy..)

I think it's awesome to have the kids start young, if they want to. This picture reminds me of a boy that lives near me. He has his own little track that he rides with jumps and dips. When a group of us drive by on our bikes, he always stops and watches us. Of course we all wave at our little biker buddy and he waves back with the biggest grin on his face! Gotta love it!

You're on the right path. He may get his bumps and bruises but he'll have a good foundation and something he'll carry for the rest of his life in many ways.

That's the sort of stuff GREAT dads parents do. I remember our little one riding his Z50 and later graduating on up to bigger bikes. PRICELESS!

Every child that age should have the opportunity to ride a motorized two wheel machine just for the thrill of it. The major manufacturers should have some sort of give-away program, if a guy with kids buys a nice scoot, they get one of the 50cc numbers for free. It would help create future customers in a hurry!

I'm with you 100%! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: I have had some close calls on my Fat Boy and my SEEG and I really believe that my motocross riding experience helped me out of the situation. Start'em early and keep'em riding!!! If my boys want to ride we let them and if they don't they don't. My fourteen year old is already making plans for his Sportster Nightster... Hey you got start somewhere right..... :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: Get the kids RIDING!!!!

I think getting a kid on a bike builds courage and self esteem   :2vrolijk_21:

Go for it, might even want to think about getting into moto cross racing with him, i know this is a little different but i started my son racing go-karts when he was 8 (mid-season) won the 3rd race he was in and went on to win several more that year, his 2nd year we lost the state champonship by 2 points, the next 2 years we (he) won the state points. We were going to move to Charlotte, N.C. because of my work, The house we were going to buy was next door to Ken Schrader (nascar) and he had told my son that if he was as good as he had heard he would sponsor him in his racing, but his mother and i went thru a bad divorce and that ended that.
my point is go for it you never know what the future will bring.

Good Luck and have fun with your son!!!!! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

My Dad brought home a Sears 50CC minibike for me when I was 5 and I have never gone more than two/three years without some sort of scooter.  I am glad he did, and I wish my first bike would have been that nice.  No rear suspension, drum rear brake ONLY.  You got a lucky boy....

I wish I would have started that early too. Despite the begging and pleading, my mom wouldn't let me ride because her first husband was killed when a tire blew out on his Harley. My dad tried his best to talk her into it, but she wouldn't hear it. When I turned sixteen and had my own money, I finally talked her into it but I had to sign a paper promising to do a long list of new daily chores (seriously). Dad took me to the only bike shop in town and I bought myself a brand new Kawasaki 175. After that, I was hardly ever home long enough to get that list of chores done !
