this kind of complaining really gets me going.
hd makes two types of bikes:
- modern ones where the idea is lots of power and little maint and few failures.
- bikes that are updated knuckleheads
buyers choice.
i clearly remember having to take the engine apart on my 79 sportster [78 to 81] and my 77 electra glide [82 to 85] nearly every winter.

i also clearly remember my kaw 1000 [86] crapping out and it taking 6 weeks to get a ignition part, and having to take it apart completely so i could fit it in the trunk of a car to get it home.

to be honest at the time i was much more in tune to fixing ignition with the screw driver on my pocket knife, and tiny vice grip and a book of matches.
i also clearly remember my gold wing [87 to 89] washing out a cylinder and finding out that the whole crank, all 4 rods, and all 4 pistons & ring sets was the smallest component to be replaced since it needed new rings and a hone in one cyl.

relative newbies probably are not nearly so forgiving of the maint it takes to keep a air cooled harley going. i understand this, but im not very sympathetic. they can go get a gold wing and throw the whole bike away when it has a problem - or shut up, fix the hd when it needs fixing. in fact i dare one of these guys complaining to ride a shovel minnesota to california via toronto and vancouver. ive done it, they cant.
