I work with resins occasionally (surf board and boat repair) and the only time I see pitting like that is when things get real hot. Small balls of cooked plastic chunk off and leave a pit. My bike has 20K on it and will get the tensioner upgrade kit this Thursday. Now I know why they included a new oil pump  !!!  Hey thanks for this thread, its much appreciated.  :2vrolijk_21:  Doc
So, Doc, you're thinking that it's 'high temp' that's causing the chunking type of wear on the shoes instead of the mfg. process allowing porosity or less density of the shoe material?  Velly interesting.  spyder

I've screwed up many a foam blank with a sanding disk that was too worn. With too much heat, polymers bead up and make crater like impressions. The denser the polymer the more heat it takes to do it. Hard resin will react like foam it just takes more heat. I imagine there are lots from the vendor which may be less dense that others (more air) and they fail. I'm hoping the hydraulic upgrade will be more tolerant with batch differences by causing less friction and heat. Doc

Different areas where I checked the crank.
Did this because of some recommendations I received.

1 - 0 run out
2 - 0-1
3 - 0-3
4 - 0-4

Andrews wants you to check runout when the pump and cam plate are installed.

Well Brian - it just so happens that I had this pdf from when I did Bob's bike and just happen to have read it yesterday before going out to re-check. So I did check the run out with the plate torqued in place (without the oil pump) and got the the same readings.

Considering the gear back lash is to be set at .0005 - .001, and that the run out may actually be a bit more then .004 due to the wear mark on the crank nose, I will be going with chain drives. Just have to decide now between cams.

So does anyone know if the new plate and chain drives can use a ball bearing for the rear cam?

Why does HD use a roller and a ball?

Would it be better to use a ball bearing over the roller?

I looked at my pictures from LtBawb's install and we used to ball bearings in the earlier version of the SE plate

And somewhere I have a "birth certificate" I received about a month or two after picking up the bike (according to a post I made here in May of 05) and I have now idea where it is  Double Doh!

I'm changing over to hydraulic from spring today and so far the shoes look pretty good at 20K. The bike next to me in the shop has 15K and they are trashed...go figure :nixweiss: While they are in there I'm having the cam bearings changed out also as they are not included in the kit. Have to change the bearings anyway, as they are damaged when removing them from the plate - cams.

Putting in the SE hydraulic kit or another brand?

My new SE plate, pump, tensioner kit still isn't in.

Same with mine and my buddies bikes (both 05 SEEG's) At 35K mine look like they are ready for another 35K, his had 15K and were almost worn all the way through.

I'm putting in the SE and was supprised the bearings didn't come with the kit. I guess they thought the pump was more important to keep the cost down. I found out that the other bike was a cop bike...too much heat ???  Doc

Unless the Factory service manual is wron, the rear cam bearing is a roller type and the front is a ball type.  I am getting raedy to install the SE cam plate and oil pump upgrade in my 03 SERK.  I haven't pulled it apart yet, still waiting on parts.

I asked the mechanic the question about the orientation of the bearings while he was on his way out the door to go home. I may gotten the wrong answer , who knows. Anyway he did say that the new kit was set up just as the original was in reference to the bearings. So with that being said, hopefully I did'nt steer anyone in the wrong direction. This is also why I don't do my own engine work. ............................................................................

As Oddball once said, I don't what makes it work. I just drive em....................................Fuzz :2vrolijk_21:

The bearings come in the cam service kit.

The aftermarket kit is comes with the bearings, the SE kit comes without and that should be taken into consideration when compairing cost. I got a good deal on the SE kit just to make up the difference on the cam service kit, but on the other hand the new SE pump is a little better.  :-\  Doc
