Fxr Luggage/Touring Bags
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:36:43 PM »

Hey Guys and Gals...Anyone here that can give me a little help, info, assistance, recommendations as to the Make, Style, of T-bags/luggage I could carry on my Fxr for the road. I have NO, NONE, NATA, NARRY, a clue as to what and not to look for in a purchase(s) of this type of gear. I know Mikey travels a lot on his 4 and I'm sure he will chime in (I Hope); but, was hoping other's knowledgable in this area would post an opinion also. I want to get  looking and researching now as I may be going to the Eureka Springs event in May (Decision to be made at last minute I'm sure due to family obligations) and want to have plenty of time to prepare. I plan on carrying a Sleeping Bag and maybe a small one man tent for emergency's only. I used to have a couple of shelterhalves and poles but don't know WTH happened to them. Anyway, thanks for any input...FXR's RULE!  :2vrolijk_21:

Blaine~~~

Here are the two that I own....I purchased the "SAC" bag first on a trip I made with Mr. Lurker back to Kansas City to visit the HD Plant to see my first HD being made....(2003 Dyna Low Rider) and then drove over  HD "WORTH" in KC I ended up getting the "SAC" bag for a very good price for 50% off at the time......lol still have the bag sold the bike...lol.....the other bag, "SUPER T" I listed I also own, the thing I like about "SUPER T" is that it has back pack straps....so sometimes it has come in handy when moving through a hotel/motel situation and your hands are full....also all of the features of it are quite handy....I also like the "rain gear" feature of this bag which keeps it "dust free" if you like...and/or DEFINITELY DRY since you have the rain cover.....anyway it's very pricey....$300.00.  I hated paying it at the time....but it's one of those purchases you close your eyes and move on....but it's really a handy option.

The SAC bag has no zippers so everything is velcro...sometimes that gets tiring to mess with where as the T-Bag (Super T) is all zippers....the outer pocket on the back is great for maps or anything paper oriented....the pockets on the side great for cell phone, camera, water, wife's "stuff" lol,

Oh and one more thing.....when you get one of these bags....go out and take a couple of rides with it all on your bike before ever leaving for a trip....to get use to it....I know it sounds silly but....you want to make sure you have all the necessary straps to hold it down....in case you want more straps than come with it to secure it.....One of the benefits of my relocating my turn signals is that the new location for the turn signals is a great place to secure the bag to with straps.....

T-BAG   SUPER- T  $300.00

Simply CLICK, VIEW, & READ:

SUPER T

Padded backpack straps stow in their own zippered compartment.

Plus either bag mentioned above is a great bag for either of my bikes...fits on either my FXR2 or 2002 RKC.

One final thing the "roll" bag is worth it....because you can always use it to carry stuff once you arrive to your destination to carry things......

I know you are considering leather bags too which is good, one side for tools, a quart of oil, rain gear, the other side perhaps for your coat....those "side" bags will get filled up in a hurry.....so the little roll bag is always useful, when you wouldn't think it would be...ie: hat, water, camera, wallet, cell phone, change of shoes...or whatever when you are at your major destination and then taking day rides from there....

Regards,

Tim

OK, here's my two cents .... and I've ridden thousands of miles on my fxr with bags  ... I'll post up some pics, or provide links to those already posted

I've traveled with Super T bag

I've travled with sport bag

I've travled with gunny sack

I've carried tent, sleeping bag, pad, rain cover, etc etc

The Super T is a good bag, over all, here's what I DON"T like about it

1) you load it from the top down......... so, remember to pack the stuff that you will want/need last, FIRST  ... First in ... LAST OUT
when you need/want something ... it will be at the bottom of the bag, you will have to UNLOAD THE ENTIRE BAG to get to it

2) everything needs to be rolled up like hotdogs to get enough gear in it for say ..... two week trip (I don't like to do laundry when on the road)

3)  the pockets on the side, are comprised by what you put on the INSIDE of the bag. So if you pack it tight, the side pockets will have less space in them

4) do to number 3, I have found that the side pockets are NICE, but limited to what they COULD be, as when the bag is EMPTY.  For an example, I have a hard case for my sun glasses/goggles   .... when the bag is packed I have a difficult time getting them into one of the side pockets.

5) I find that number 4 also applies to the map pocket on the front of the bag, but less so than on the sides.  I do like the map pocket, but the more stuff that you CRAM into the inside of the bag, the more you crowd this space ..... it doesn't work out like the THEORY makes it look ......

6) I actually prefer my duffel bag better than the Super T ........... HOWEVER, the rain potection that you have with the rain cover for the Super T can not be matched on my duffel bag.  AND, as Tim said, that roll bag is GREAT !!  I put all of the gear that I think I'll need to access in that bag.  My rain gear, gloves, coat, stuff like that. Then I have found that I've also had room in there for some socks and underwear........ Consider, this bag goes on TOP OF THE LOAD..... put the stuff that you need to get to IN THIS BAG !!  When it gets hot outside, I bungee my coat, chaps, gloves, rain gear ON TOP OF THE ROLL BAG.....

I always put the T bag on the seat behind me, and use it as a back rest.  I bought a luggage rack from SAC that slides down over the sissy bar, no tools, and on that I carry my tent and all other camping gear. If I think it's goona rain, I cover it all with plastic bags before I put on the bungee cords, and use the rain cover on the 'T" bag.  I've never had my gear get wet !!!!  I'm a NUT about that !!!!!!!!!!  I DO NOT want to EVER pull into a spot at NIGHT, IN THE DARK, COLD, and have my gear be wet !!! NO NO NO !!!

here's the SAC luggage rack ........... WARNING..... be CAREFUL not to OVERLOAD this rack. It is made from PLASTIC and  the little fingers that go around your sissy bar can and WILL BREAK !!!  You could loose your load !!

I've always used a 3-pc set of Tourmaster Cortech bags for touring on my FXR3. They have worked well for me for over 9 yrs now. I had considered (even bought a set) putting FXRT hard bags on to my FXR3, but decided I didn't want to do the modifications required to make them fit.

Hi,
I just purchased a T-Bag Universal Expandable for $180. from Motorcycleproshop.com. The Super T  $299.has a slightly bigger back opening for maps etc, a removable metal bottom to prevent sagging and eght bungee connetion spots. The one I have has four bungee spots but I can make a bottom for my bag. It was the best buy I found, normally goes for $229. I try to save where i can now days. I also went to Viking for leather saddlebags cost $280  same bags else where were $450. I even compared the model numbers! Because I just odered my bag, being shipped UPS, I have no photos yet.
There are alot of choices out there. In the end it's personal preferences and affordability.Good Luck!
