Spun face oil temp guage
« on: September 25, 2005, 02:46:54 PM »

Has H-D released a spun alluminum faced oil temp guage? I see the black one in the big wish book, but no silver. Would be willing to install a black one, as that stupid (non-functional) ambient air temp guage has gotta go...Thanks

They've got the matching compass that you can fit in there.     [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]   spyder

Not yet.  A lot of us have been watching and waiting.  Phattey had written a few months ago that his local parts counter had suggested it was a near term release.  But it didn't happen with the last dealer show.  That means we've likely got (at least) until the next dealer show to wait.

The other day I ran across some guys talking about the regular black-faced ones on the V-Twin Forum (click here).

Have read all reply info, and I'm of the opinion now that I would be asking for trouble (and considerable labor cost) to get into an oil temp guage from
H-D. Spyglide, you may have something there with the compass. I could always replace the inaccurate volt guage if something feasable becomes available for oil temp. Do not want a sensor for an oil pan drain plug like the unit from Walley's. Thanks guys!

Another consideration is that many (not all, but it has seemed to be a majority) have voiced the opinion that the compass is a little flaky too.  Comments have included difficulty to calibrate, innacuracy, and the need to recalibrate everytime the battery is unhooked.  Use the Search tool with the word compass and tell it to go back 300 or 400 days.  You should find a couple of helpful threads.

Thanks Twolanerider, looks like I'll just keep my money in my pocket on this one. To digress, two questions:how do you like the side bag spoilers, and do you have the Corbin King Tour Pak backrest #132 with the armrests? How does it mount up and does it afford adequate passenger space. Thanks again!

Far, I really really like the spoilers.  Both the ones on the saddlebags and the ones on the tour paks are great.  I actually do quite like the look.  On top of that you get a running light and a brake light at a much higher elevation on the bike.  Since they really are a pretty simple install (if you don't mind drilling holes in your bike) it'd be a hard choice for me not to have them.

I did get the King backrest to match the seat from Corbin.  The passengers that have used it have all said it afforded them plenty of room to be comfortable side to side and was generally good as a backrest too.  Never been back there myself so can't speak from first-butt experience.  But the anecdotal evidence has been good.  Here's a pic of what their backrest looks like:

Made by Roger McEwan Co., part #gk-61537A.

I have this on my 05 SEEG...  Looks great replaces the air temp gauge that is useless.

My only complaint on the unit is that it does take a few minutes to give an accurate reading.   Once the bike is warm its fantastic and looks sharp just like the stock gauges.

It does take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to install though :)

I recommend it.

Any chance they have a web site?? Would like to get something useful rather than looking at the air temp guage that reminds me it's over a 100 degrees today....

They are complaining that the gauge faces on the actual H-D unit does not match well with the factory gauges (same complaint we had with the Roger McEwan gauges [click here]) . . .

Twolane,

I did not place that much attention to it.   So far it seems accurate once the bike is warm and its a hell of a lot more useful than the air temp gauge, I just didnt compare the needles which I will do when I put on my glasses the next time as seeing up close is not my forte anymore.   My eyes get tired reading 8 page links to be sure I didnt miss anything then its all over cant see squat.  I need to go get my glasses now I blame 103 !

To be honest its close enough for me since until now I never even thought it wasnt close enough and since it has more function than the air temp  guage it will stay on the 05 seeg. :)

If they came out with an Exact match I might switch, but until then it stays.
