Fender bolt clearance when removing front tire/ wheel
« on: February 05, 2009, 08:41:39 AM »

When I removed the front wheel to replace the tire (stock size) from the FXR4, the fender mounting bolts protrude far enough to impede the tire removal.  I let the air out of the tire to get it out.  I did the same on the re install.  I just got a 19" Roadwinder brand new fro $250 on Ebay and will have to do the R&R again.

What have you guys done in that situation?

Might not apply in your case--my FXR2 has the 21" front wheel and tire that might be narrower than the 18" on the FXR3 and 4 models--but my fender bolts extend into a nut and end flush with the nut surface.  Do your fender bolts go beyond the nut and is that the issue?  Maybe you have to remove the fender bolts as part of the tire removal or get shorter bolts?  My tire drops out without any interference.  Hopefully one of the FXR3 or 4 owners here will have a direct experience that will help you out.

I've never taken mine off personally ..... one thing that I HATE to do is mess with tires and wheels .... I always take my bike in for that, just the way I am, I HATE messing with tires and wheels, oh, did I say that   :confused5:

I'll take a look at mine and let you know if it looks like that, or if the bolts stick out past the nuts

The fender mount screws do not extend beyond the nuts.  This time I'll try to spread the forks a little to see if that works.  If not, I"ll deflate the tire.

like I said, I've never personally taken mine off, I HATE working on tires and wheels, ......

but I did go look at it.....

FOR SURE, you'd have to let the air out of the tire in order to get it off, either that or remove the fender.

IF (and I NEVER WILL) were going to remove the front tire ... I'd let the air out, and try that first. If that didn't work, then I'd remove the fender .....

I let the air out.  Less chance of paint damage.  When unmoved since assembly in 99, good change paint has stuck to the mount and will chip off when disturbed.

New wheel looks awesome.   I'll take pictures when it warms up.

Hi,
I also have a yellow FXR4. I put new tires front and rear. I had to remove the front fender/bolts and both brake calipers to get the front wheel off.
Was not hard to do but nessessary. Rear tire change out was a pain. I  removed both tires, changed and balanced both tires. Won't do that again by my self. easier with help.

I don't do tires .... PERIOD !!!!

some things are worth paying for ... my time is worth money, and changing tires at home takes a LOT OF TIME, and is a HUGE PITA !!!! Couple that with the fact that I have no way to BALANCE them, and I have to go back to the shop anyways ..............

I DO NOT DO TIRES .............. PERIOD !!!
