COLLIDING SATELLITES: Experts are calling it an "unprecedented event." Two satellites have collided in Earth orbit. Iridium 33 crashed into Kosmos 2251 on Tuesday, Feb. 10th, approximately 800 km over northern Siberia. Click on the image to launch a 2.3 MB animation of the collision:

We are also suppose to have a solar flare reaching Earth today or tomorrow. See what possible interesting things come from it.
I read somewhere that one idea they have as to why the sats collided was because of a flare.
Did you follow the story out and read about the HAM operator that was tracking sats with his PC, and some radio equip and a YAGI antenna. The Gov had an interest in him also. The Gov was concerned about it because if he could do it other 3rd world countries could also track them.
Back to solar flares, I guess there was a really strong one years ago that it caused a surge in the telegraph lines catching the paper the telegraph ops used to catch on fire. Almost makes me want to disconnect my computers and other electronics for the next couple of days.

OMG, if two sattelites can collide in outerspace with all that room with nothing in it (other than space junk which is relative to the amount of space there is) the odds of getting smucked here on earth are astronomicle considering the amount of earth junk competing for the same real estate.
that outta make ya feel better, huh?

All that open area up there and they still manage to somehow collide... Dont the engineers calculate orbits, etc to prevent things like this?

The rusky sat was a deadbeat. The Iridium sat has had the capability of being steered out of trouble IF they were warned of a potential impact.

Both sides are pointing the fingers at each other and the rest of the space world is wondering where all that debris is going to end up.
