I've towed since 2004, you almost forget the trailer is back there and the bike handles alot better since it is not loaded down with gear.

we picked up our trailer last Fall on our way to MV...before, we managed three week trips two-up without one, but we pretty much carried the same amount of stuff for a three day trip anyway.

Well, I can say that it was only used for this one trip so far but I am sure we will find it invaluable....never again will we have to prematurely ship home our heated gear!

The one thing that I nboticed as the big difference is on the twisties...you cannot let yourself drift to close to the edge (unless you get the n-line type trailer).  Our bushtec is about three feet wide, therefore the outside wheel will be about 1.5 feet more than where the bikes tires will track...so soft shoulders need to be taken in to account as well as cliff's

Amen to that brother.  You're everyone's buddy when you head out as a group.  On the plus side I've still got someone's sweatshirt left over from Hot Springs two summers ago :2vrolijk_21: .

Dang it!  I've been looking for that shirt for months.   ::)

Trailers are only dangerous with a women on board...they tend to fill up quickly. The handling of the bike is much better than a full load on and in the tourpack.  Doc

I have built a couple of them over the years and certainly appreciate the extra carrying space when 2 up touring. If I am going by myself I don't find it necessary.
As reported earlier, fuel consumption is up by 5 or 6 mpg. What I tend to notice most is - the extended stopping distance (not dramatic but still a factor) and the fact that you don't do the twisties quite as "hot".
Oddly enough I have found that in extreme crosswinds the trailer seems to act as an "anchor" and I don't get blown around nearly as much.

Trailers are great if you load them correctly, be sure to balance the load and get the tongue weight right for the load just like you would for a car. If you don't, YEEHAW!!!! What a ride.

Good point Mike. You definatly do not want "the tail wagging the dog".
I carry a chicken scale and check the hitch weight after loading or adding to the load. I keep the hitch weight at 10% of the gross trailer weight (which usually comes out at about 23 pounds in my case).

I have been pulling an Alumna trailer since 2002.  From 2002 to 2008 I pulled it with a GL1800 Goldwing, which I traded in on a 2008 CVO Ultra.  The Ultra does just as good a job as the wing did on pulling it.

Just do not forget it is back there.  It is easy to do because they tow very easy.  You need to remember to provide extra room for turning around in parking lots, braking, and backing out of spots.  The trailer keeps weight off of the bike suspension because the luggage is being towed, not carried by the shocks.  It is so much easier to pack and there is room for all the souvenirs and T shirts.  I tend to keep about 20 pounds on the tongue when I load it.  I use a receiver hitch so I can pull the hitch when I do not have the trailer in tow.  Use locking hitch pins to hold the receiver and the trailer to the ball.

What's a chicken scale? (no relation to a henway)
