Alternator rotor & spacer damage from loose comp nut
« on: March 05, 2009, 01:17:26 AM »

Some time ago my comp nut loosened up. Took it to the dealer and they "tightened it up. Couldn't tell you if they followed the TSB procedure.

This is apparently the damage caused from riding it with a loose nut.

The spacer is beat, forgot to measure it - will do in a day or two to see just how bad it is buggered up.

Have witnessed the sprocket shaft nut come loose on many a bike over the years.
Mid 90's XL's were notorious for it.

I was fortunate and had no damage.  Was lucky to have caught mine loose when I had the primary cover off checking the starter ringear teeth.

That looks bad, have seen worse though, a few that had the teeth almost completely worn off. This rotor should have been replaced. My bet is the dealer that tightened it for you did not bother to remove the primary drive to inspect it after it was loose.

And what a shock that would be!

Had mine go down as we were leaving Maggie Valley for York a few years ago... sounded like someone was making margaritas down there (ice crushing in a blender).
We doubled back and went to the dealership in Hickory, they were just opening up for their 1st anniversary... they pulled it all apart, looked a lot like the pics above, covered it all under warranty except they advised me to replace the plastic tensioner, got out of there for less than $10!  :2vrolijk_21:
And while we traded the bikes for a cage, we made it to York and joined the group in the morning!  :drink:

I had the same problem while in Georgia....sounded like there was a knock in the motor.  Unfortunately for me, Macon HD diagnosed it as chain tensioner noise which I gladly took there offer to repair.  Long story short, the "tech" messed something up with the oil pump and by the time I got back to Myrtle Beach and had the bike trailered home...the motor was trashed.  Turns out the comp nut loosened causing the original noises. I had to spring $4200- for a remanufactured engine...Macon HD did nothing for me, the same response from HD.  I have been told red loctite should have been applied to the comp nut threads, apparently it wasnt.    :-\

Looks like a good time to upgade to a 45 amp rotor and a Cycle Electric Stator. I remove the screwed up shim and cut .020 off the length the the compensator nut.

Guys,

Here is Bulletin TT122 from HD Dated October 29, 2003 in regards to Engine Noise and Vibration.

Also Service Bulletin M-1770 May 27, 2005; COMPENSATING SPROCKET TORQUE PROCEDURE, so you can see this has been a problem for awhile.

No doubt.

Yes a lot!

Already have it.

I remove the screwed up shim and cut .020 off the length the the compensator nut.

Why? The 45 amp rotor does not use a shim  :nixweiss:
