If you can explain to anyone here how a company can treat their customers the way Harley does, and we keep going back and spend more money with them.....

Is it Great Marketing  or  We are just Stupid Dumbazzes

my answer is both

Nah... we do it for the camaraderie... I do anyway. You meet the nicest people on a Harley.

...$ 523 tow bill... sure is nice of HOG to pay the first $ 100 of it. <joke>
...The HOG towing is a separate thing and isn't related to warranty repairs.  That one can be used for anything, even flat tires, but only covers the first $100.

The first $100 for towing is the limit with the FREE road service you get with your HOG membership.

If you pay $19.95 annually for the premium road service, the entire towing bill would be covered.  In addition, there is no limit on the number of road service calls you can make per year with the premium road service, whereas with the free road service, you are limited to one per year.

Granted, even with the premium service, they will only tow you to the nearest Harley-Davidson dealer so you might be stuck if you break down on a Sunday, but I think the $19.95 per year is well worth it.

I'm not a person to respond to marketing pitches or to buy a product because it is supposedly "cool", and somehow I let them do it to me.  I think we are all just dumbazzes who probably shouldn't be allowed out in public by ourselves.  I originally bought my first Harley because I wanted to support American products.  I hate to be a hypocrite, and after ragging on friends and neighbors about the foreign cars they bought it would have looked pretty stupid for me to continue to buy Japanese bikes.  Well, I can now buy American cars that are every bit as good or even better than the Japanese, but I can't buy an American motorcycle that's even close.  And that's just the product itself, the customer service aspect is even worse.

Have faith, though.  The situation will eventually improve as the old folks die off and all Harley has left is the fickle younger generation that has no brand loyalty at all.  Then Harley management will either change their ways or follow all those other American brands into oblivion.

Maybe I've just been lucky.  I'm on my 3rd Harley.

1st, 2000 Road King Classic.  Purchased with 6,000 miles, sold with 27,000 miles.  New owner has close to 50,000 & has replaced the cam chain tensioner.  Beyond normal maintenance, that's been it for him (he's VERY happy with the bike).  I had to replace a throttle cable (broke in AZ, 3 blocks from a dealer.  They had the cable in stock - I replaced it in the parking lot with tools in my saddle bags).  Replaced crap mirrors 3x due to chrome pitting.

2nd, 2005 Road Glide.  Purchased with 4,500 miles, totaled last year with 24,000 miles.  Cruise control switch went out (warranty), and headlamp fuse blew (never knew why - just replaced it & never blew again).

3rd, 2009 Road Glide purchased new.  So far so good.

I can't speak as well for my (former!) Mercedes automobiles.  Switched to BMW's about 4 years ago, and their reliability has been excellent (similar to my Harleys).

I'm happy with the product.  That's all I can say.

My 07 seuc left me stranded in Indiana on my way to the 105th last August.  Coming from KY, I was about 400 miles from home when the flywheel broke loose and destroyed the engine. HD gave me a new engine, late 08 110", and shipped it back home for me.  I had the deluxe road side assistance and they paid for a rental car to get me to Milwaukee, then paid for a rental motorcycle to ride around when I was there and paid for my hotel and meals for 3 days.  Total of almost the maximum allowed of $1,000!  I was bummed that I missed the bike show, but I guess I can't complain about the customer service.
