Jiffy Stand is Not the problem, the problem is the clutch overide switch, they break way to ez when messing with the left switch housing. and when replaced they used the old style which works BACKWARDS. the new switch must say -09 at the end. same thing happened to me when I installed my CB on my SERG. I had the switch that came with wiring harness but worked as yours does. Dealer sent me a new one for free,
Is it throwing a code saying something like pinched wire in left housing, and is it interfering with your cruise control.

I installed the CB radio on my 2009 SERG, and now the bike must be in neutral to start. However, my issue seems to be a self-inflicted wound. Unfortunately, not my first, and probably not the last. I remembered the clutch interlock switch, and I vaguely remembered this thread, which saved me a lot troubleshooting time.

As stated, the CB kit required getting into the left handlebar control housing for the squelch switch. I ordered a lower half chrome control switch only rather than used the black replacement switch in the kit. My tech installed what I requested. I think I got the part numbers off of this site, but it really doesn't matter because I specified the parts to be ordered.

It now works bass-ackwards. It starts fine in neutral. It will not start in gear with the clutch engaged, but it will attempt to start (like prior to 2006) in gear with the clutch out and launch the bike forward! :'(

This is exactly the same problem that I had. My problem came after having the dealer install the CB Radio and replace (only) the lower left switch housing with the matching chrome part that accommodated the PTT control. I had the same symptoms -- plus there were several things that were "screwy" each time I started the bike until the ECM threw the code about the clutch safety switch:

  • Indicator light on the speedo was much slower to light up when shifting into 6th gear
  • Cruise Control would not engage until the ECM threw the code
  • Security light ("key") on the tach was always on -- even after the ECM threw the code.

If I'm not mistaken, LarryB had the same problem after installing the CB Radio himself.

I'm guessing that the lower left switch unit came with one of the pre-2009 clutch switches. The good news it there is a lot less angst because I know I an start it in neutral and I have a good lead on how to fix it.

Replacing the clutch safety switch with a 2009-model switch solved my problem, too. It seems that the logic in the clutch safety switch was reversed in 2009. This kind of switch is either (a) always "on" and activating the switch -- i.e., squeezing the clutch -- turns the switch off or (b) always "off" and activating the switch turns the switch "on". Apparently, through 2008, they used one type of switch and starting in 2009, they changed to the other.

It never occurred to me that the clutch safety switch might have come pre-installed in the housing. If that is the case, then that would explain the situation. In fact, if the communications kit for the CB Radio (which includes a black, lower-half, left hand control) or the chrome lower-half left hand control (purchased separately) came with the wrong switch pre-installed, !!VOILA!!, then this problem is likely to happen for anyone installing a CB Radio unless they know to order the 2009 clutch safety switch and replace the pre-installed unit as part of the install.

Interesting...

not so fast grasshopper. the real problem is in the dismantling of the switch housing to install the ptt. if you losen the lever bracket and slide forward before you tear into the switch housing you can avoid damage to the switch. look at an exploded view of the works. whats happening the stock one gets broken and replaced, they are using on from an 08. if someone has the part # you can reference 08 vs 09.

Well.  it is indeed the pre-2009 switch, it was not pinched wiring.

I removed the 2009 clutch switch from my discarded bottom left hand control (black and black-red wires) and swapped it out with the switch in the newly installed bottom half. Problem solved.  :-*

As RickC, LarryB, and other have stated, the 2009 switch is a different part number (with identical wiring colors :nervous:). It works bass-ackward from the prior year switch.

The dealer will get me a new switch, but the wires are concealed in the handlebars and it will be pain to replace it. The "fix" was replaced with soldered connections and shrink wrap insulation, so I am not too concerned with riding with it during the interim period.

Once again, thank to this site for saving me, and the tech, lots of trouble shooting time. However, I bet this problem will continue to bite lots of other people in the future.

I made the change under the speedo, real pain to go all the way into the fairing. got it and all the CB wiring internal.
