Jerry you are correct. i would still pull the rocker boxes and check for coil bind. If I were going to stay as close to stock or just do a mild upgrade I would look at the 557 with a set of Jims lifters and adjustable push rods.

Dawg,

The numbers for the 253 do look weird, but that's directly from the S.E. catalog.  BTW - any idea what lift our stock heads will handle without modification?  I thought I read here some time back that they would handle up to .570, but I can't find the thread it was in.

Jerry

grc these heads have SE triple valve springs so they should handle lifts up to .650 according to harley's specs on those springs. now that's only what the springs can handle!!! [smiley=pumpkin.gif]

O FENDER I was just wondering where you got your info about the springs and spring height on our stock 103 heads?

Well O'Fender I gave you 24 hrs but I think we need to get this straight before someone on here hurts an engine!

First off the stock 103 screamin eagle heads on our bikesdo not have TRIPLE SPRINGS, they are DOUBLE. Second and most important the spring height on our stock screamin eagle 103 head is set up to handle 550 lift not 650 as you stated.  [smiley=oops.gif]

Now you may have just gotten some bad info from someone and if you did you need to let them know what the real deal is. Inquiring minds want to know!!!!!!! [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Hey all,

John from Zipper's here.

We just scored a spot at "Destination Daytona", the new H-D shop for Biketoberfest.  Here's the deal:

GOING TO BIKETOBERFEST?

Come see us at the new H-D dealership "Destination Daytona" Wednesday through Saturday, October 19-22. We'll be offering free installation of our ThunderMax EFI modules on your EFI bike. We'll install it, you ride it. If you like it, keep it ($399) for up to 30 days; if not, take it off and send it back for a full refund. You can also get information on the latest engine kits and performance offerings from Zipper's. Stop by and see us!

Hope you can make it by to see us.  Thanks, JK

GRC,

You had asked about gas mileage. Got in the original tank I did testing on last Saturday and another 150 mile ride tday.

Mileage on my originanal tank during the ECM swap was 40.14 mpg. Lots of full throttle pulls, hard roll-ons. Trip today was 37.7, two up about half the trip was freeway at 80 mph and the rest was a mix of moderate riding over varied backroads with a group of about 50, so there was some occasional hot rodding.

Had the hiccup happen several times, but got more information to help resolve it. Starting the bike, hit first time and never died, This is different from last weekend where it started and then died then restarted.  Also noticed whenpulled up to a light, the idle was a little high, probably 1000 to 1050 rpm for about 10 to 15 seconds, then would settle down to 950, according to the tach. Not sure for the variances in idle, but this occurred with the original ECM as well, so mayhe IAC plunger or TPS os on one edge of the spec or borderline tolerance. Also noticed another thing, the low fuel light didn't come on - first tank took 5.1 gallons,so it should have been on. Will add it to the list for the dealer to check when I take it in for some works

Finally go thru the problems wth getting the notebook (CD went out Monday, Hard drive went Thursday night) over the last few days and now can get an actual look at the settings and triggers in the software. Will start with the IAC checks as outlined in the instruction manual and see what happens.

Will keep updating

Jim on my way back from Myrtle I also noticed the low fuel light on my bike didn't come on and I took 5.2. When I asked a friend of mine he told me it didn't run through the ECM.  I did remove my tank when installing the TB so I might have not connected a wire. Just something else to check.

Yep, don't think mine has ever worked.. Almost ran it dry a few weeks ago, too 5.33 to fill up and it didn't come on then... Well, at least Austin HD has a good rep on it's service department.

Good thing I knew there was a station slose by... I'm not pushin' and I'm not leavin' it...  ;)

I have the V&H dresser duals and am in the process of ordering the Racetuner. I havent been able to install the pipes yet, or the SE Ac kit, I've just been running stock with the ovals. But as I said, I'm going with the dresser duals, SE AC, and ?? Should I go to the TM? Can I install it and the AC and header pipes and be done with it? If I dont have to go to the tuner I save 3 bills. Appreciate the input, I'll be doing this in the next few weeks so If there is a group buy I'd get in on it if its what I decide. Thanks, Mike

Mike,

I had the pipes and AC on then swapped the ECMs. I had the same decisions about RT as well, but snce my problem was finding a tuner, I wasn't any worse off with the TM than the RT from a tuner perspective. Since the map that came on the ECM is a lot closer to start with, I think my final resluts at this stage will be less dramatic than most. I've found an Indy that is about an hour away from me that is Direct Link  MMG trained and he does a lot of Zippers products, but hasn't doen a TM yet, so we came to an "agreement" - darn the bad luck. Best part is I get to be in on the tuning session, don't get that at the sealer.

I think it comes down to this: where is the tuner, does he use RT and is he good at it? if the answers aren't close, yes and really good, then seroiusly consider using the TM. You could alwys look for a shop with a Dyno and see if they would be willing to work with Zippers on the TM - means more money in thier pocket.

As far as the future upgrades, don't think it would be any different tuning the new parts with the TM as it would be using RT and non-HD items.  I think Zippers would be willing to help suggest the map changes based on curent combinations and what you were looking at.

Another .02 worth...

GRC -

Yeah, wouldn't be sirprised at all if the IAC or TPS wre just a shade off. I got to look at the ECM whild the bike was running. Did notice something though - in the TM instructions, it stated that the IAC sensor should be between 90 and 115, mine was set to 95. Had the bike running (idling with some blips on the throttle - trying to get the hiccup to appear) for 11 minutes and the IAC position went to a low of 49, so not sure what that means. The other interesting item was a sampling point called "Idle Error" and it kept bouncing between 16, 32 and 48. Never did get the hiccup to happen, usually will happen everytime when cold and you blip the throttle. I'll email John tomorrow and ask if he has some detail around the different sampling points.

Maybe if Dawg is watching he'll throw his .02 in....

JK from Zipper's here.  I tried to post an updated version of the instruction booklet here but I guess this site does not accept PDF files.  If anyone is interested, it will be posted as a PDF on our web site under "Downloads" on the home page in a few days.
